- MarianneI should of research this number first. Got the same critical error message and called. I did walk thru several things with this guy and he downloaded a program to connect to my system. He showed me several things which made me believe everything he said. Showed me how I had a foreign ip address connected to mine. Showed me this screen that accessed all my user names and password. Said they haven't been able to transfer the files but I had to pay 199$ to fix it. Which I didn't but now I'm freaking out that I did just give them access to my accounts. Any advice?? What do I do?

- DylanPop up alert directed the end user to call this number. They then put on a dog and pony show about how the computer's security was compromised, appeared to show alleged evidence of hacking, and managed to scam the user out of some money. The number does lead to on-hold music and directs the caller to hit 4 to continue. They even will send follow up emails in an attempt to look legitimate and keep the victim on the hook. If you receive this pop up or anything related to this telephone number, please check in with someone computer savvy or a legitimate service that you trust and not call the number. If you have access to an IT department at your work ask them for advice but do not call the number. Stay safe out there!

- Elaine replies to LindaIT'S A SCAM !!! My computer froze & was told by the message coming up on the screen that the computer had been hacked & they would fix it for $199.99 U.S. funds. They identified themselves as Microsoft. I foolishly believed them & paid the fee, which converted to CDN amount of $272.94, at going exchange rate for that day. Then I got a call 3 days later, from a woman asking me if I'd had the computer fixed, & gave the date. I couldn't understand a word because of her Indian accent, & became suspicious & hung up. My computer then froze shortly after, with a message that my computer was sending out spam messages including porn, etc., telling me to call this number. I immediately called my local tech guy, & he told me to shut off the computer. When he arrived to do the clean up, he told me it was a scam & that other customers in the area he services were falling for it also. I immediately called my bank & reported the fraud scam, & fortunately my bank account was credited the full amount in CDN funds. I went to the bank the next day, & I changed my debit card for a new one. I was relived that I had acted quickly. I always google unknown phone numbers, but for whatever reason, didn't do it that time. My local tech guy did the clean up, all's well now. DON'T BE FOOLED BY THIS SCAM. He told me Microsoft NEVER calls you about fixing your computer for a fee. I hope everyone who googles that phone number reads this & benefits from my report. Good luck, & safe computing!
- ErikSame story with my poor, aging mom. Her system froze with the scary message on the screen from "Microsoft", soshe called the number on the screen (888.319.2856) and spoke with "Network Security Engineer" "Steve" (initially) and then a tech named "Abi" (both of whom she noted had Indian accents, "Abi" saying his last name is Singh). They were polite and competent sounding to her, and said they were with Microsoft. "Abi" walked her through a scenario (dog-and-pony show) about her system being infected (which obviously it is...by these scammers). '"Abi" then took her credit card information and charged her $299 for support to "fix" this issue. She then got worried that she's been scammed, and hung up and called me. I'm an IT pro and have worked for many years at MSFT in the past. I told her to call her bank immediately and request to have the charge removed. The bank representative shared with my mom that she had also been taken by this unfortunate scheme, along with her mom. "Abi" actually called my mom back (because she gave him her home phone number) - how nice. These criminals are very good at the scheme, and it's obviously very profitable for them to keep at it.
Folks - Microsoft Support is not involved here, this is a total scam which can be very, very costly. Microsoft does, however, provide a "Malicious Software Removal Tool" (MSRT) which may help identify and remove it:

- KevinFell for the scam hook line and sinker. They showed me how all of my credit card and banking info was easily accessible. Said they could fix for $199.90. Not extreme pressure, just told me that the problems would only get worse. Transferred me to a level 5 tech to fix my "problems" after getting my payment. I watched what was going on and they were using freeware from microsoft store to fix my problems. The "level 5 tech" then tried to sell me a one year or three year plan. I declined. Contacting my bank in the morning. Their receipt also includes disclaimers. and warns against saving or dispersing the document. They are very good at looking legit with follow up calls from the tech and a "manager" to make sure everything is working okay. Pretty sophisticated ransomware scam in my opinion.

They were fast to put that money back ! Thank god but the computer has been off all day and I’m sure when I turn it back on it will go back to the virus they put in it ! So they could “fix it “ [***] losers! Telling her that ppl were watching her and they could see everything she’s doing ! Horrible people on this world ! Be aware !!!

- RobynA few months ago I was working on my computer & it froze up with a flashing warning & had an annoying sound with it. It said my computer was infected with a virus I think & it was locked up. It said to call a number (I believe it was this one & it was a guy who said he was Microsoft tech support & said he could fix it & then talked me into buying this computer service plan that I paid like $400 for a 2 year plan. He supposedly fixed my computer & gave this number to call if I had problems. He said they would not call me. Yesterday I got a call from the phone number 1-850-601-9022 & it was a guy saying he was from Microsoft & I asked him if he was with the same company as this service plan & he said yes. He said my computer was compromised from an on-line purchase I made & I gave him access to my computer & he pointed out that someone had broken through my firewall using some program. He said my plan should cover things but said the problem was not through my computer itself but my IP address & something with Google. To fix it he wanted me to buy $500 worth of Google Play gift cards so they could straighten things out with Google & they would pay me back for the $$$ I spent on the gift cards within 24 hours. I was only able to buy $100 worth of gift cards because the store had to do them as individual transactions & the third transaction set off a fraud alert so I couldn't get anymore. I was frustrated & came home & typed on my computer screen that I was back & gave him the #s of the cards I bought. He wanted me to try to get more cards today & he would call me back but he never did. My husband did call the number back last night & chewed the guy out. I realize now that this was all a fraud. These people are pretty slick con-men. I reported this incidence to the County Sheriff's Dept, my credit card company, my bank, credit bureau, filed a complaint to the FTC. I wanted to file a complaint with the BBB but I don't have their zip code. Spread the word to as many people as you can about this. I hope these fraudsters get caught someday soon.
