Called our landline. Left message on machine. We called back. They asked for personal information and we did not give them any and told them to stop calling. They continue to call and leave messages. Tried to phone back and get a dead dial tone.

"Hi this is Sean Stiffert (or something like that), calling you from the IRS, the legal dept of the Denver Revenue Service.  The nature of the call is to inform you that we have received a legal petition notice with your name contending a tax fraud.  The minute you get this call, I need you or your attorney to return the call to 888 325 0960."  Message left on answering machine.  Intended recipient not indicated (not addressed to any person by name).Spoken in rather broken or accented English.
Suspect a scam.  Reverse number look up generally reports "No results found".

Yes, the fake IRS caller gave the name Shawn Stiffert on my answering machine.  The voice sounded androgynous to me and very forceful, was trying hard to hide an accent. The message was the same as Stan W. above mentioned.  Apparently, this scam has been very rampant and is the biggest phone scam so far.  Here are articles about it.  The first article indicates where these calls seem to be coming from:

A man with an accent claiming to be from the IRS called regarding a legal action and asked if I had an attorney. I said that I am an attorney, and he promptly hung up. This must be a scam. The number was 888-325-0960

We got a call, claiming himself to be an IRS investigation personnel and he claims that there's a fraudulent case against me only, (that should be enough warning for me, since we file as couple) then he went on and started blabbering so many tax evasion case numbers and so on and so forth....and when we asked him to just send the letter because we could hardly understand his English, he claims that he has been to our home twice and we cannot be reached...we are retired and mostly at home...and when we asked what was our address, he started saying a different one plus an apartment number...that's when we knew he was the fraudulent one and hung up on him....Please IRS, do something about this and warn people not to even start conversing with them, this made me a bit nervous, can you imagine so many senior citizens falling into their trap?

I just got the same message on my answering machine with identical message stated by Stan W.  Very annoying by listening to the message.  Check out the number 888-325-0960 and got to this webpage.  I hope the real IRS agents will get the message and put a stop to it.  I am 70 years old and seems to me he is trying to target the old folks.

    Tired of these calls
I answered once and spoke to them and told them I would just wait for the legitimate letter to come from the IRS and hung up.  They have tried several times to phone and I let it go to voicemail and hear the same message.  And they don't give the name of the person who owes money.  It has happened at least once a week for the past month.  So according to them I should have seen an arrest warrant by now.

I got the same voice message about it being the IRS calling about tax fraud.  I did send an email to "phishing@irs.gov" as requested by the IRS.  Hopefully they can track down the owner of the 888 number and prosecute them.
