Called and I hung up knowing it was a telemarketer, called 5 times after that!

Called my cell phone. I finally stopped receiving calls from 631-277-7025, and now I'm getting calls from these yahoos!

This number calls my cell phone and then hangs up without leaving a message. It would be nice to find out who they are and how they are getting unlisted numbers on the do not call list.

This number called me on a Monday at 8pm.  Asked for my name and hung up on me when i replied yes.  Lots of noise in the background.  The lady sounded like she had an asian accent.  When i called back from a different phone i just got the sound when you call a fax machine.

I just tried to call and got a loud fax machine buzz in my ear. But they hang up everytime I answer the phone too.

Called my mom a few minutes ago, guy on the line was nice enough, asked a bunch of questions about a proposed mine in the area. Granted my mom loves chatting up strangers, so it would be hard for him to annoy her.

Sadly, the DNC applies to marketers, opinion research does not apply.

The DNC registry applies only to companies or people who are selling a product. Market research does not apply because they are not trying to sell you anything. Think on these terms - It's not illegal for a person to call you and ask your opinion about something if they have your number, DNC or no. Same way with companies. What is of questionable legality, is if they call you more than once when you have clearly told them you are not interested. So the best thing to do if you repeatedly get these calls, is not to ignore it or hang up. Answer, if they ask for your wife / husband, just say you are them (They can't prove otherwise) and tell them you are not interested in participating. Then you can start documenting it if they call you more and report them.

As to how they get unlisted number, I actually wrote a paper on this, but they basically get it anywhere. Everytime you put your phone number on anything (Including filling perscriptions with pharmacies, for instance, one seemingly benign example) the number gets sent out to numerous other companies. Sometimes it is sold, and in some cases (using the pharmacy example) the information is given to pharmaceutical companies to track how many people are using their medication. So the critical thing is to avoid giving out your number to any company if you can avoid it, and ask at the time you do give it if they share this info with anyone else. Chances are the clerk or bottom level person you are dealing with won't know anyway, but sometimes they do and if you can get them to note on your account or entry or what have you that the number is NOT to be given to any other party without your permission, it can, in a few cases, deter a company from doing so.

called late at night (10pm), didn't recognize the number, let it go to voicemail.  Didn't leave message

received a call from this number and said that it was "maguire research" wanting to speak to me (they gave my complete name) and then asked if it was me using my first name.  I responded "yes" and they hung-up.  I called back and it was a fax line.

Said they were from "Maguire Research". Asked to speak with me (first and last name).  Asked if it was me, I said, "Yes" and they hung-up.  I called back and it was a fax line.

just received a call from this number, the "the McGuire Group, doing research for issues in Santa Monica".  When I asked to call back, he hastily said that he would remove my cell number from the call list.

My experience as well.

Call to ask for my wife, when i asked who was calling, they hung up.  I also called back and it went to some fax line.  Can't we catches these [***] doing this somehow????????  i want there number and call them late at night to wake them up (how do you like me now)!!!

A person called and said they were taking a one-minute survey about voter registration, or something of the sort. I asked them how they got my number, and they said they didn't know. When I addressed the caller as "sir" (since their voice was deep), the caller stated that she was a lady, and got very rude with me before finally hanging up.

When I tried to call back, there was a modem sound.

Called me at 6:30pm on a Thursday evening. I let it go to voicemail and there was no message left.

They called first time, were told no time for their survey and my wife hung up.  The male caller called right back.  He said he was wanting my wife's opinion about something with govt.  She told him her opinion was he was an a--h-le for calling back again and she hung up.  He called right back and I, the husband, answered and he said you're an [***] and hung up!

This is part of a fax scam to steal your phone number.  REPORT IT TO YOUR PHONE COMPANY, REGISTER IT WITH DO NOT CALL REGISTRY COMPLAINTS, REGISTER A COMPLAINT WITH FCC/FTC.  DON'T ANSWER YOUR PHONE AND DON'T LET YOUR ANSWERING MACHINE PICK UP WHEN THIS NUMBER CALLS.
