Not necessarily spying on your wifi.  They insert malware into the songs so that if it is illegally downloaded, like you did, then they know who did it and then send them a take down request.  If not you get sued for copyright infringement.

lmao...no, they can't insert an executable (.exe.) into a song, since it is only a Data file. Watchdog groups monitor Peer-to-Peer file transfers for Copyright material and send a complaint report to the Service Provider of the "downloader" for Piracy. Most Providers will cancel your service if you continue Pirating Copyright material after being warned. Generally they email you the complaint, not call you.

The article that I read must have described it wrong or I misunderstood it.  I read it many years ago.

I received two calls like this, one said something about copy right infringement about something I downloaded ( I use FrostWire app) and that I need to delete it immediately and call them back. The second one said it was Volbeat and about the same thing that I need to call them back and take it down. They're claiming to be from my internet service provider but they've never contacted me at 8 pm so I'm suspicious. I called and waited on hold for 20 minutes before hanging up. I'll be calling my internet providers local number tomorrow to see if this is legitimate.
