Got this call from the number twice so far about taxes and IRS!!  The person states we have been named in a lawsuit.  Bunch of BS!!  DO NOT CALL BACK!!!

got 2 calls from this number also.  they left the same message on my answering machine.  did a reverse phone # on google and  received valuable info,  scam

got 2 calls today from this number.  The recording states to call this number back as you are going to be sued by the IRS and would like to clear up this issue before filing the necessary court papers.  I have called my local police department and registered a complaint.  DO NOT RETURN THIS TYPE OF CALL ---- SCAM.

Called back, and then they called me back, claiming to be the local police department, coming to get me!  Even had the caller ID of the police department!  Ridiculous!  I asked to talked to an American, and they hung up!

Got two calls from this number on 8/23/14 claiming we were named in an IRS lawsuit.  Has to be a scam as the IRS does not make first contact of any kind through a phone call.  This sites helped because I see others have gotten the same call.  Thx

I called our local police department and they could not do anything...then gave us two numbers to call...one irs and the other treasury department. Go figure...you can't talk to a human being or volumn of calls are too high...have to go on website....very frustrating AND if Americans need jobs...how about opening more jobs so that you can take our calls....disgusted.

Just got the same call twice.  The first time I called back the number was disconnected.  The second time was no answer.  I did call my local court house and they said it was probably a scam and that I had no lawsuits pending!!!

Got a recorded call 8/25/14 from this number: 888-394-6940. I know for certain I have no pending IRS lawsuits.  This is a scam.

So, these guys, who said they were Internal Revenue Service, asked me to call back.
I did - over and over and over and over and over and over.

They blocked MY number!

We received a recorded message from 888-394-6940 saying there was a lawsuit in "your" name. When I returned the call, the person asked what number I was calling from, and I gave it. Then he asked what my name is. I told him he should know my name if there is a lawsuit associated with that phone number. Then he said in his sounded-like Indian accent - "I don't know you. Don't call back here. This is the IRS, .... " and something else - and then hung up.

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

I just got the same call... A message was left on my VM. I called back and a man with an Indian accent answered.  I verified my name and address.  He told me it was an IRS lawsuit and wanted me to verify my last 4 digits of my SSN.  When I would not give it to him, he told me that the local police department would be at my door in 45 minutes.  I told him that I will be here to welcome them to figure this out.  I contacted my local police department and they told me that it is a scam.  They started with the elders and are moving down the list.  The IRS will contact you via mail if there are any issues.  I also got the local IRS phone number so I can file a complain with them also so it is on record.

received a call from above number stating that it was the IRS and I am involved in a lawsuit.  I am NOT a party to any lawsuit. This call was a scam and I would like to report it and get some action from the law enforcement community about these preying calls.

My experience on August 28 was similar to the above, although one caller impersonated the IRS while another impersonated my local police department.   The "IRS" guy asked me to not interrupt until he was finished speaking, then read off a bogus "indictment" with "count 1, count 2, count 3," etc.   I reported this on both the IRS website and my local police web site.

I got this call today.  It also looked like someone is using a software to insert word 'IRS' after recording of words 'Department Name'.   You can almost feel the awkward gap.  

Total BS call.  Bunch of Loser Scam Artists. IGNORE and YELL AT THEM if you get a chance !

I received 2 calls today from 888-394-6941. We do not answer 888 calls and let both go to VM. The beginning of the VM got lost due to the greeting message, so we can't tell what entity was supposedly calling, but 1) the message was made up of snippets of prerecorded words; the speaker said we could intercede before the case filed with the (gap in msg) county courthouse. I called back just for fun. The phone rang four times and then disconnected. So far we have not heard threats concerning the police. I will report this call.
