- Nomad| 7 repliesReceived an email stating I bought a Microsoft Surface Pro and the charge was $1600.
I panicked and called the 888 number in the email. An Indian-accented (most likely fake) female answered and wanted me to bring up a browser and enter some URL. Fortunately, I realized they wanted to REMOTELY ACCESS my computer. They hung up. Unfortunately they now have my cellphone number.
MORAL of the story:
1. Take a deep breath when you get any email that causes you to panic.
2. Don't make any contact based on any information in the email (phone numbers, email address etc)
3. Call the customer service department on the company's website (In my case, call Microsoft store) OR
4 Check websites like this.- Call type: Scam suspicion
- Melanie replies to Nomad| 3 repliesI got the same email. Do I need to call the Microsoft store, or can I just mark it as spam?
- IwannazapemI knew immediately this was a scam because it came into an email address I only use when I don't want people to know my real address. Besides, who would pay $1600 for a tablet?
- MikeSame experience. Email claiming confirmation of a purchase of a $1600 laptop, to be shipped to an address in Cupertino Calif. I checked, and the address is not of this city. Checked, and no charges on my credit card. I will disregard this message.
- Ellie| 1 replySame phishing email as the others. Email from "windowshome@livestore.cc" which is not a valid Microsoft store email address, with an order summary for a Microsoft Surface Book 3 for $1600, order number OD19932912. Computer to be shipped to 3245 North high street in Cupertino, CA. Gave this number in huge bold font as a support number. I could tell immediately that this was a phishing email since there were spelling and capitalization errors and the largest part of the email was the number to call. Normal business emails would have company branding and feature the transaction instead of just text that primarily features a "support" number. A quick search confirmed that the email address and phone number are NOT linked to Microsoft.
If you receive emails like this, DO NOT CALL. Instead, if you're unsure, look up the company's website and call the number they have listed. If it was a legitimate transaction, they'll have a record of it and you can work it out with them. If you call this scam number, they will just try to scam you through phishing and/or downloading malware to your computer that will track your keystrokes or lock it up until you pay them to "fix" it.- Caller: Not Windows Home

- WellyGot an email from “windowshelp@livestore.cc” with an order for Microsoft Surface Book 3.
- Caller: Windows Store

- Jim F.I got that email too, $1600 "purchase" -- same phone number. Dogs have fleas, computer users have scammers.
- Steve in Colo| 1 replySame as the above. Don't call the number! Probably a reverse billing and it'll cost you big time. There are no clickable links, so it has to be a reverse charge phone number. Bad news is written all over it.
