Affny (sp) - said debt collecter for Direct TV.  I have been in dispute with them for quite some time now.  And now they have a debt collector calling me at work.  I never put my work # on record with any bills so this is a big concern to me.  Call me on my home phone, not work phone.  Direct TV will be getting another call, fax and email with all disputed paperwork and backup.  As will this debt collector I guess.

Call from Acne debt collector looking for someone we actually do know. Thing is they just live in the same county as us. We are not friends, just rare acquaintance. I think it's pretty [***] they are now indiscriminately calling someone in the same general vicinity just for greed. How embarrassing for these folks as you know this crappy company has called other people. Now do we tell them that this is happening, or just let it go? That's a pretty crappy thing to do to an acquaintance as well. Just plain wrong.

From the comments it suggests that this for direct tv. However,  in my caller I.D., they have chosen to disguise their real number with the same area code and the first three numbers that are local to me. In other words,  when I see the number it looks like someone from my town is calling.  That is weird! !

I assume a debt collector for Directv.  I actually picked up the call. He was looking for my husband and I told him that he wasn't available. He wanted an alternate phone number, but we don't have another #. The person was very rude. Left his name as "Simon" but wouldn't tell me what the call was regarding. We don't have Directv.

If the number really belongs to Direct TV, they should respond or have their company name show up.  If an unfamiliar number is calling my fone, I ignore it.

They call but no message. Caller id only shows the number no name. This is illegal, immoral, and harassment.

The caller is from AFNI, Inc., a debt collection agency in Bloomington, Illinois. If it's not you that they seek, call the number back and have them remove you from any further contact.

This company wanted my birthdate and ss# before they would even talk to me and let me know what this was about. Are they out of their mind asking such personal information? And if it for DirercTv then they can kiss my ass since they owe me. What a terrible company. NEVER EVER GO WITH DirecTv

Got a call from this number and they left no message..typical for a debt collector. My wife finally answered and they asked for a Tonya somebody. My wife has never been a Tonya and has had this phone number for 10+ years...so either someone is giving them the wrong # or they are just randomly calling close numbers to try and find her. I have NEVER and WILL NEVER have direct TV..They suck ASS!!

This is a common ploy by criminals attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this,  all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.  One of the tricks they use is to call your work place repeatedly in an attempt to shame you into paying.  They also use the “process server” who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number.  Now why would a “process server” want to do you, a stranger, a favor, and at the same time not get paid to deliver the papers?

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
