- Alfalfa replies to BrendaThe Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
•is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
•refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
•asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
•exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
•Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.•Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
•Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
•Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
•Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

- KJ| 3 repliesReceived a voice mail from Sharon in "legal services" looking for a statement on May 6, 2014. She said I would be served in 24-48 hours. I called her number, 888-480-7567, and left a message on May 6 when I received the voice mail. She left another voice mail before 9 a.m. PST the next day saying she called at 10 minutes to noon, so I determined she was calling from the Eastern time zone. She had my social security number and said she was calling about a bad check I wrote to a check cashing place in 2006 - eight years ago. She said she was not calling from a collection agency. When I asked for verification, to she said the documentation had to be provided to me and I'd be served. But she never verified a home or work address, nor did I offer one. She was rather rude and confrontational, and said I'd be served. She wished me good luck. I have received calls in the past, that clearly came from a call center and from men with an accent, who probably did not speak English as a first language. "Sharon" sounded like a native speaker. But like the others, she did not offer a payment plan or other solutions. I find it hard to believe that it took eight years for a legitimate loan place to find me. My phone number has no changed, and my number and email are no secret. Yes, I have taken out payday loans, but I don't think I have outstanding ones. She indicated that others appeared to have been paid off, but not this one. I think people have a right to be suspicious. I was pleasant, asked questions, and said I looked forward to receiving documentation. She was dismissive an curt.
- Caller: DNCA
- IrritatedKeep calling me and leaving messages stating they are a 'legal' department and that I owe money and there are legal actions being taken. Will never say what it is about until I call back and they tell me the 'Cash Store'. I tell them that I don't owe anything and I have already reported them to the FBI - which I have but they keep calling. They are EXTREMELY rude and will not stop calling! They have used acronyms for their 'company'. The latest one is DNCA.
