I paid my student loans off over 30 years ago. I've had my cell number for about 6 years. Do the math. Yet I get calls on my cell from these crooks.
Sure they are a student loan servicer, but they use predatory practices, generally ignoring the law or hiding behind various state laws when it benefits their bottom line.
    A quick search turned up this{ http://www.consumeraffairs.com/finance/great_lakes_student_loans.html

The link attributed as the the "official government website" is NOT a government web site but one belonging to Xerox Educational Services and is also known as ACS. It is another private company contracted as a student loan servicer.

I noticed that my new cell phone will let me tag specific numbers in the contacts list to go directly to voice mail. I added the number to my contacts and set it to send all calls from the contact directly to voice mail

well, i do not nor have i ever had a student loan so if that is what they want (since they dont bother to leave a messege) they are wasting their breath.  As for garnishments, yes, your wages can be garnished for student loans. However, it is not simply a phone call. First, they have to prove you have them. Then you have to receive a Certified letter from the Dept. of Education addressing your debt to them and an opportunity to appeal.  Then after all those things are exhausted, you will receive a letter(not a call) from the IRS informing you of their intent to garnish your taxes.

    Grate Flakes replies to Sarah
Grate Flakes IS a debt collector - they are forced to admit that in a growing number of States.  They were originally the GUARANTOR of your student loan from SallieMae/Navient who is supposedly the "Servicer" - though I think they bought a lot of loans from the fraud riddled Deutsche Derivatives Bank and others.
Grate Flakes is the leg breaker.  I had paid Sally $25,000 on a $15,000 loan back 8 years ago.  The banks created the Trillion Plus in student loan debt - as all money is created - out of thin air - with ledger entries.  Though I had already paid them $10,000 OVER the loan, I only had paid about $7500 of the principal. This is going to be the next bubble to burst.  Fight them every inch of the way.  I believe that Grate Flakes - AS THE  DEBT COLLECTOR THEY ARE - buys defaulted loans for pennies on the dollar - 2-5% and then tries to collect the whole amount PLUS more vig - more usury - more "interest."  Through excessive debt and administrative forbearances - Sally/Navient ran my loan PRINCIPAL all the way back up to $15K.  F&&K them and the (w)hores they rode in on (CONgress) - in Iraq prior to Bush 1 (Poppy) any student who could make the grade got excellent free schooling all the way thru doctor/lawyer or multiple PhD's - paid for with the People's oil.  Public Banking is the solution to a NEW New World Order of Affluence and Peace.
