They called with this number and when I didn't answer they called back from a local number that they acquired to make me think I was from my home town not New York. Is that legal?

Look...they are a collection agency; they have the right to call you from any number from anywhere, unless you have exercised your rights and asked them not to call. Of course, they then have the right to sue you to collect the money you owe.

Your best course of action is to answer and work something out. Putting off responding to your debt will only make matters worse.

Do you think ignoring them will make them go away?

Yes, eventually they will have to sell the debt and move on.

NCO is corrupt...(laugh it up, employees
These people are sharks.  They keep calling my home asking for someone that I've never heard of before.  I tell them there's no one here by that name and still they call.  These people are freaking morons and should be castrated.  They get paid to harass people...  since I don't condone violence and threats, at least publicly, I'll leave out what I'd like to do with these people if I ever saw them on the street.

Besides... I read somewhere that they are corrupt and linked to some kind of crime.  Just let caller id screen them.

And to, "There's no Law against it"... perhaps you've never been in debt before and do not know what it's like to be broke.  There's no reason to harass someone for being financially challenged.  Go kiss their @$$ somewhere else.

Man do I want to visit with these people face to face.  Anyway, they were loooking for someone have no idea who it was they are looking for and when I told them I WANT REMOVED from their calling list cause I have no idea who it is they were looking for they were VERY RUDE and ran their mouth off, that's it, never did they say they were going to remove my number from their list as I asked!!

This number has called my house every day, sometimes up to four and five times per day. I had to write the number down that was provided over a recording, and I called it back because I was fed up with it. It turns out that it was for a sister of mine who no longer lives with me. These people have done a background check on my sister and found out who she knows, where she's lived, and who knows what else. The guy who spoke to me was not impolite, but very adamant, wanting my sister's number. I do not give her number out without her permission, and that upset him. I did tell him I would have her call them, and that my number be removed from the list. If not, I am going to a lawyer to file harassment charges

I got a call today from NCL Financial Systems - left a message saying they are a debt collection agency and by law they must tell me that and any information can be used to collect on a debt.  Asked me to call them back.  I KNOW that I don't have any debts that I owe and as a lawyer, I know that I would have recieved something in writing 1st (my number and address have not changed in ten years) - sounds like a scam or something, and so I may or may not call them back - with nothing in writing - there is nothing that they can do to me.

Got a recording when I answered. The recording told me to Mr. Moffit (didn't he run the Death Star in Star Wars?).

Having a recording call and demand I return call them is a quick to get put on the list of people never to get a call back from me. Dumb-[***]!

    who are you now
nco financial systems-scam--former names I have and also known as:  national revenue corporation (creditors alliance); pinnacle credit services; fourscore resource capital; retrieval masters credit bureau ,inc.-(violation to imitate credit bureau);  national credit services; soure receivables management (srm); transworld systems; fms investment corporation; united creditor's alliance; vericore (started by ex-nco leaders); calvery portfolio; nco group, inc (academy collections-ftc fine, etc;  worldwide asset, northland group, emri/ersi; and spin-off-bayside asset, truelogic financial; genesis financial; bill graham; etc.   Also, I got a message-had voices/automated like that of nco in 1 sentence, another sentence-like the voice from enhanced recovery--call was I think from nco;  another call from frs--like english accent-enhanced recovery.  At least it adds a little variety-the new&improved voice message?  (Tommorrow, my caller id will probably say 'new&improved, and probably 12 digits for the #).  Maybe in las vegas since so many people are being contacted by debt collection scams--they should put odds on who is who, how they'll leave a message; in 1 week-how many fdcpa violations whoever will commit.

Spoken like a true pond scum bottom feeding bill collector.

The truth is you need to do what is legal.  If they have your home phone # change it.  If they have your cell and you have a smart phone get an app that blocks numbers.   There are a lot of good sites with the numbers they use to call.  Some like NCO have over 170 different numbers in my database.

They can' t just excersice a "right to sue you to collect..." until they actually identify you and your actual location.

Most people who could pay - would, so telling matt to "answer and work something out." is not a solution.  The scummy collector will badger, threaten and even yell at you when you tell them you don't have the money.  If you have any assets like a bank account or a job now they will take you to court for a judgement to seize your bank $ or to garnish your wages.  Conversely not answering doesn't allow them to positively identify you and your location so they will not spend the money to go to court unless they can find you.

Ignoring them will make many go away and sell your account to another scummy debt agency.

Your post clearly makes you out to be a current or former scum sucking POS collection agency goon.

Unfortunately these guys and whoever they sell this account to will land up trying this number again and again.  You have 2 choices:  1) Change your telephone #  2) if your # is in do not call and they keep calling you after you tell them you are not their target you need to log and keep records and get a lawyer to sue them.  This violates both the FDCPA and DNCIA
