- AmyI recommend don't answer. I've read several comments on other sites as this and some say it's terrorism. We are on the Do Not Call list and still get lots of telemarketing calls. I don't answer my phone at all if I don't recognize the phone number. It shouldn't have to be this way since I am paying for my phone bill. Not happy but until there's a better system nothing to do about it.

- TeleZapperFirst of all... get a "TeleZapper" (google it for more info) They're not made anymore, as far as I know... but I bought one used on eBay for about 20 bucks. It works well in most cases (computer or manual dialers). Also, get a cordless phone system that you can program for "quiet hours" when you don't want to be disturbed. These phones typically also allow you to add calls to a blocked list (better ones can block up to 250 calls - mine's full and I could use 1000. I usually go through the list and clear calls that haven't occured in a while).
Also, if you have a phone answering machine (and these cordless systems usually do)... you can record the TeleZapper "tones" on the beginning of your answering machine's outgoing message, wait 2 or 3 seconds, then record your normal outgoiing message. This works (if the tones are clear and loud enough), and can save you a few bucks on buying a TeleZapper... but you would HAVE TO screen your calls by letting the machine answer when you don't recognize the caller. - Ms H replies to bigunkI would get great satisfaction by making an appt then canceling, but I too am wary of what repercussions could happen.
