- Alfalfa replies to StephanieThis is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:

- SanI intercepted one of these calls by accident today. When I answered, a guy who sounded like he was from India, Pakistan or some other Middle Eastern country, asked for the co-worker by name & then asked me to give her a message to call the "State Attorney's Office" in Los Angeles, CA, & to ask for "Alan Mortan". (He spelled the name for me & pronounced the last name as "Martin".) None of what he was saying made sense to me, so I stalled him by asking him to repeat the callback number & spelling of the name while I did a reverse phone look-up on whitepages.com. It said they were calling from Winchester, CA, & that it was a telemarketer. I then looked up the State Attorney's Office in Los Angeles & saw the number has a 231 area code, which confirmed what I had been thinking anyway -- there was no way the Attorney General's office for Los Angeles, CA, would not be IN the city of Los Angeles, nor would a call coming from that agency NOT have that 231 area code -- maybe an 800 number, but certainly not a 951 area code. When I called the guy on the inconsistencies, he called me liar, said that I did not have correct information & what I was looking at was wrong. I let him know I was reporting his fraudulent activities & only then did he try to back up -- he asked for the number that he called so he could remove it from his call list & I told him, no, that I'd let the authorities deal with him & that. Evidently, that angered him because he then began cursing, tell me to kiss his a** & telling me that he'd call that number every f**king day. And then I hung up...
This is a SCAM to get money, period!

- tashaI received a call from this number on my work phone this morning and they told me that they were with the attorney generals office in CA, told me I had a law suite and 3 charges and tha the federal gov has been watching me for years. He said that I could pay today and they would take care of all of my debts and if I didn't then the police would come to my work and arrest me. As you can imagine I was a little freaked out about this until they mentioned medical bills. I said I can't get arrested for owing what little if any medical bills I have. So I asked him where just one medical bill was from, he couldn't tell me that. I told him this was a fraudulent call and I was not paying them anything and hung up. These people need to be put behind bars. This cannot be right!!!

- Ginger L. ByronThis is a fraud attempt. The individuals appear to be calling from a call center in India. The caller would not stop calling my home, yelling, and leaving illegal messages on my answering machine. They claim they are from the Attourney General's Office. They threaten to have me arrested and put in prison for 9 months if I refused to pay them $631 over the phone.

- Caller: Attorney Generals Office Scam
- Tangela Mayer replies to StephanieI received the same phone call. They told me they are from the State Attorney General's Office and that if I do not call them back there will be legal action including having the local police office visit me at my work. The message was left on voicemail and the person talking identified himself as Mr. Allen Martin. He left my mailing address and work physical address in the voicemail. They have called me before at work and threatened to blow up the buidling. We had to file a police report. My manager actually spoke to them and when we told them that we knew they were con artists the man, Mr. Martin, became very belligerent and started making threats.
