Harassing calls from a debt collector? Here is what you need to know
Debt collectors are highly motivated to convince debtors to pay the debt because they work on a commission. This business model has created the reputation for bill collection agencies that we know today. The collector might engage in threatening behavior and harassment. However, like any other business they are governed by laws that prohibit certain abusive practices.

- tiredofthegreedyI'm living in an old trailer thats falling apart,
I pick up cans and sell them so maybe I'll have something
to eat for the night.
Then some super rich company, who lives in big fancy homes
and drives mercedes with millions and billions in their
bank account calls me up begging me for a dollar
before they go out to there 500 dollar fancy dinner and wine
and then sit in there 5000 dollar hot tub afterward.
you have plenty of money. you don't need my money.
I don't understand how millionaires and billionaires can be
so worried about getting my dollar which I was going to use
for food, so maybe I dont go without.
your not going without. not by a long shot.
you greedy [***]! why would you want my dollar
so badly? you have plenty. you dont need mine.
I need it worse than you do. my money is better off in my
pocket, than to just add another dollar to your
billion dollar bank account.
in the Bible read Luke Chapter 16
starting with verse 19 and on.
Thats where your going if you dont
change your ways and help the poor. - AJ replies to RPNo states require "AGREEMENT" to tape a call, Federal Law and MOST states only require one party be aware of the recording. A few states, like California, require both parties BE AWARE, but not both consent. The party who doesn't consent, once aware, has the right to hang up!
Very Important to note the difference between AWARE and CONSENT! - Dea replies to APLook here. This is the bible for debt legitimate debt collectors. You should know about it if you have debt collectors after you, because it details YOUR RIGHTS.

http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/fair-debt-act.html - Ms. D| 2 repliesI had a guy from some company call my house for a debt, he asked me my name and he told me my address( which I didn't confirm) and said had I had some bill that I needed to pay. I requested to have the notice in writing and he said "no we already sent it to you, you just ignored it" The guy was pretty rude. What should I do from here? it has been over a week, still no letter.
- gibbi-I run a collection agency replies to Chris in Los Angeles| 18 repliesThat's fine but remember to send a copy of your payment to the collection agency. The collection agency and creditor will have a contract agreement so just paying the creditor direct will not stop them from calling till they get verification from the creditor. Believe me, most creditors will not call the collection agency on a direct pay because they will not want to pay the collection agency thier commission, but by sending the collection agency a copy, "they" will call the creditor to confirm that information. "Never" say you have "cut" a deal! I run a honest collection agency in Utah.
- LexYeah, so I've been getting calls on my cell phone from what appears to be a collections agency. They are recorded messages that end up in my voicemail if I don't answer it. It claims to be "an urgent message" some man, which makes no sense, since I've had this phone number for over 4 years now. Also, they have the nerve to mention that "we have left numerous messages at this number, but have not received any response". Then when you call back the number they tell you to, it's some other woman's business voicemail. I left a message there, but still get these calls.
They've tapered off a bit in the last week, but prior to that, I had been getting 2-3 calls EACH DAY, for the last 3.5 months.
PLEASE MAKE IT STOP! - christopher sr| 1 replycan i get this call blocked from my phone company? any inquiries would greatlly be apreciated. thanks.
- Goofy64I have a few questions about collectors. How many times can a 1st party call and does it matter if you answer? I had one tell me they could call 4 times a day. I let the answer machine pick up but they hang up. They have called 5 times today starting at 8:08 am. I tried to settle the account for a lesser amount but they said if I could settle for an amount then why can't I make a payment. He also told me that my account was not able for a settlement. It sounds like my account has to go into default before I settle. What will happen to them for calling more than allowed? If they get fined it won't help me with my bill any. Some of the caller aren't bad but the supervisors are the worst. Thanks for any help.
- HWI received a couple of phone calls from a Harold somebody (couldn't make out the last name-some lawyer) from 1-866-480-0992. They wouldn't give me a fax number or address for them. I know they're in Florida. Their representative was extremely abusive (language wise) on the phone. Does anyone have any additional information for this guy?
- NoName| 1 replyI got a call from a collector and when they were verifing my info they said the wrong last name (which is my ex husband last name and it has been changed because I am remarried)they also gave my the last 4 of my social and all the numbers were right except the last number. So I was like uh that is not mine and hung up. What can I do about this or what should I do about this. Thanks
- ShirleyThey called my ex-husband of 22 years' ex-wife of 3 years to try and find me. I could not believe they would do such a thing. I called and asked for a fax number from them so I could send them a cease and desist. I intend to send a cease and desist by certified letter. They must have some kind of lower form of animal that takes on these credit debts.
- Hi-CI owe a debt that I had been making payments on. The collection agency sold my paper to some other collection agency. I am making regular payments and even added $10 more and they call me every day. Can I go directly to the original company that I owe the debt to? Can collection agencies harass you even though you made an agreement with them. I owe this debt it is mine and I am making payments.
