Silent Spam Calls to toll free numbers
- LesI have Kall 8 as well and have been getting these all hours of the night... I finally set my account to route calls to voicemail after hours. thought it was just me getting them! I am assuming the inbound callerid is bogus but will ring up kall8 customer service tomorrow and let them know they have another unhappy customer.
- Sammy| 5 repliesHi folks,
Thanks for the info on here. For probably the past 12 months, I have been experiencing the same problem on my 866 number.
We use Grasshopper.com, but the best they could do for me is temporarily disconnect my number which they thought would "kill off" the robo calls.
We shut it down for 24 hours (risking a loss of business), and the calls stopped for maybe 5 days. But, then they started back up and have been going strong 4-5 per day for months.
I'd hope this isn't grasshopper calling the number themselves (though it would be in their interest since we pay per minute for calls), but their software doesn't even have a way to block numbers, so they certainly aren't to motivated to fix this problem.
I'll try the FCC approach, but have low expectations that it will resolve anything. - stogieJoe| 1 replyThere was a period of couple of weeks, it looked like it was over... but now it is happening again... I'm getting really fed up with this non-sense...
- Maggie replies to stogieJoeCan't tell you how glad I am to have found this thread. We're in Canada and have been getting these calls for months now - I knew it wasn't a predictive call glitch because telemarketers aren't stupid enough to call someone in the middle of the night. We're a micro micro business with one line at home and all calls whether toll-free or local or whatever come in on it. I finally looked at the toll-free calls on the long-distance bill and there they are - from all over the US and a different number every time. I'll call my long-distance provider tomorrow and see if they can help but at least I now know why I'm getting them and nobdy else seems to be. We turn off the ringer at night now but hopefully there is a better answer. Obviousley someone is running a scam somehow to make money out of these things and that payphone explanation makes sense to me.
- The-TruthI've been having the same problem, but the numbers trace back to Google Voice when I call them back from an anonymous number. Usually it's the generic Google greeting, but one was a free cruise scam. It's all day and night, and I have a call in to my provider because it's chewing through my minutes fast. My number is on my business website and has been for 10 years with no previous problems.
- Janet replies to KevThese calls need to STOP
- Mark S replies to lone strangerI use VOIP.MS to handle toll calls inbound. Here is what I did when I stated getting what sounded like spam faxes (I don't have a fax):
I created a recording and a call treatment
"You have reached _____, Press 1 to be connected or press 2 to leave voicemail."
If neither 1 nor 2 are pressed in a few seconds, the phone connection terminates. Thus I never have a phone ring unless they press 1 Pressing 1 directs the call to my extension configured in the account, which is a VOIP adapter and a phone.
The toll free number monthly cost is $1 a month and calls are billed at a penny or two a minute. - RattOP here. I filed a complaint with the FCC last October and the calls stopped for over a month. They started again in December and I filed another complaint with the FCC a few days ago. Most of my calls are over night but I still get several thru the day. They wore my numbers out over the Christmas and New Years holidays.
I am calling Kall8 today to gripe about it again.
The FCC now has a form specifically for abandoned calls to toll free numbers. If you have a call detail report, you can attach it at the end of the online form. Be sure to scrub legit calls from that report. The spam calls are usually easy to sort out due to their short duration.

They must now be using totally random spoofed numbers. I have googled almost every one of the CID numbers and found no references like we used to find when they would make thousands of calls using a single spoofed number.
Ironically as I type this I just received a call from 774-316-7242 thru my main toll free number. - CarlDepending on the nature of your business, it may be worth restricting the area from which your number accepts toll-free calls to be just that where you actually market... for instance, if you're Canadian selling just to other Canadians, having your carrier disable inbound US calls can cut the number of inbound wrong numbers by an order of magnitude. Blocking US payphones often makes sense as those calls cost 60 cents + long distance charges, per call.
It may also be worth asking your carrier if they have ANI (automatic number identification) data, separate from call display. ANI is the number for billing purposes and is not as easy to spoof. As they're calling on your dime, you are more likely to have a right to know who is calling you than if these were coming in on regular geographic numbers - MidNYteStorm| 2 repliesResponding to these suspicious posts is doing nothing but giving them the attention they want. We should be more proactive in reporting these posts.
- MJG replies to MidNYteStorm| 1 replyDone & I am done.
- MidNYteStorm replies to MJGI know the temptation all to well.
- Julia| 2 repliesI don't see a problem with "classactionalert" posting a short message trying to see if there is any interest in filing a class action suit. I would prefer to see more credentials such as a phone number and a name in his post.
If anyone decides to contact the poster, please do not reveal any personal information until you know whom you are dealing with. - Tamianth replies to JuliaI agree with you on that one Julia. Tread carefully..Be safe!
- CelticDragon replies to JuliaJulia, I can understand him doing it in one place-but posting it all over is spam to me-then there's the fact of the domain lookup giving me an address to a media group...
