Am actually considering actually going back to a landline after a couple years with subpar Magic Jack. Just weighing the cost v benefits of doing so right now. Yes, I am an old fuddy duddy. I know it has been mentioned in responses here, but I am not able to find the reference. Someone has recommended a specific brand and type of landline phone that really does a good job of allowing you to block calls/numbers. Can anyone tell me what phone that was?
Thanks

Possibly the Panasonic brand, that's the one I use. It's limited in the number of calls it can block. It still rings just the once when the scammers call, but then stops.
Others have stated the "PhoneTray" software for your PC can be used to filter incoming land line calls. I have never used it, so I can't comment on it. It does, however, cost money to purchase and you will need a PC "dial-up" modem.
I have cut the land line completely and use a cell phone, which is also a smart phone. There are tons of apps for every type/brand of smart phone for filtering calls.
I'm currently running the “Phone Tray Free” version (which they don’t offer any more.) It works fairly well for me on an old PC running XP. I have a phone number that belonged to an entire family of deadbeats and for the past couple years have had to deal with numerous collection outfits calling for the various members of their family as well as the usual credit card interest and free cruise scam calls. You can block individual numbers, blocks of numbers using wildcards (e.g., 555-555-???? or 555-???-????), and by the Caller ID name information (e.g., any call showing “ACME INC” could be blocked.) You can set it to just pick-up and hang-up or play an outgoing message of your choice, that can be tailored to each number, using WAV audio files. It keeps a log file of the calls that have come in with date, time, and the Caller ID info. The paid version (the only one you can get now) has all of the above plus some other features, but I am not familiar with them as the freebie version suits me fine. You do have to have a phone modem (still available and pretty cheap these days) and Caller ID service on your phone line. It does have the disadvantage that it lets your phone ring at least once per call.
I'm using the free version of Phone Tray. I work out of my home office a lot so the computer's on almost all the time and Phone Tray Free works very well.
You can no longer find the free version (Phone Tray Free) on the official web site – they only offer the paid version now. It's quite inexpensive and has some nice options but unfortunately it demands to "phone home" to its mothership, not just for updating it's database of abusive phone numbers (which I could do without) but even to install on your computer at all. That's a deal killer for me (and especially ironic as Phone Tray is supposedly all about protecting your privacy).
If you are familiar with torrent sites it's easy to find Phone Tray Free, though. The last version was 1.39.
