Canadian DNC List Will Be Good For Five Years, Not Three

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) today announced that telephone numbers registered on the National Do Not Call List (DNCL) will remain on the list for five years rather than three years.

The new registration period will automatically apply to the more than 6.7 million telephone numbers already registered on the National DNCL, as well as to any future registrations. The Commission will continue to review the National DNCL's operations and make improvements to provide a better service to consumers.

They obviously do not have a solution to the problems they faced with registration when the program was instituted and are simply putting off the inevitable for a couple of years.

Government agencies have a funny way of looking at things. They just change the rules to make it look better for themselves, they transfer to a new department or retire and let the new people solve the problem or wait the government to change at the next election (which is less than five years) with the expectation it will have better legislation.

The only way to improve this mess is remove the political party exemption. It will then be easier to remove the exemptions given to others. Enforcement is another major problem that is not now being faced by the agencies in charge.

Removing Political parties is not the ONLY way to solve the mess. There are also little clauses in the act, like if you called a company to inquire about a product or service, there is a 6 month window in which they can call you back at any time. If you do business with a company, they can call you for at least a year, possibly a year and a half if I'm not mistaken.

I for one don't always mind political polling calls, I try to be as honest as possible with the hope that it may help a party direct their platform in a way that might make me vote for them. However, when politicians ask me for money, I kindly tell them I pay enough taxes to support your ass. I'm sure they can milk the system for some more money.

As for the enforcement issue, I would like to see a section on the Governments DNC list site which shows active investigations and a list of companies who have been fined, showing the full amount of fines too. It would make the service more transparent and hopefully make a statement to companies not abiding by the rules.

Good for Canada!  But these lists, be they American, Canadian or state or local, are only as good as the enforcement effort to uphold them.  Telemarketers have proven time and time again that they are willing to operate illegally so long as they can get away with it.

Since I put my home phone number on the list last fall, the calls at first did not decrease, but now I don't seem to be receiving them any more.
