"Celebrating" The Do Not Call's 10th Anniversary

This summer, the national Do Not Call Registry, managed by the Federal Trade Commission, turned 10 years old, and there are now a whopping 221 million phone numbers in the registry. But the calls keep coming. Telemarketing complaints at the FTC have risen from 150,393 in 2003 to nearly 4 million last year (roughly 2 million of those were robocall complaints).

Your post made me giggle...lol. Let me explain. You mentioned them using profane language. Back SEVERAL years ago, my husband was still in school, & we let a few bills get behind. One went to collections. (I accidentally let that one slip through my "juggle the bills" plan. ;) Anyways, my husband received his first ever call from a very nasty collection agent, threatening everything from legal action, getting his cheque garnished, to loosing his job. (Then how would they ever get their $$ right? lol) After listening to this guy for a few minutes, my husband burst into hysterical laughter! The guy asked what was so funny, & my husband told him how ridiculous he was, pointing out his flaws, all while still laughing. The collection agent told him he didn't have to take this abuse, hung up & NEVER called again! lol I've since tried this tactic on human telemarketers & it usually works. They HATE you laughing at them. I've also played the "repeat back what they say" game, pretended to sell to them, (so, would you like to reduce your long distance charges, etc) and on a few occasions, when in a bad mood, or interrupted from something important, sworn at them. Those methods work about 75% of the time. Problem now though is the Robo calls. But if any of you get a human voice, try one of my suggestions. The laughing works WELL!

By the way, the bill collector was calling about a gas card we forgot about, in the total of $126. All those threats for $126. **sigh** I went out the next day & paid the money directly to the gas company & screwed the collection agency. Plus we reported him as well. I think it worked out GREAT!

DNC is a joke - it just gives the scammers a list of live numbers to focus on. 90+% of our calls are now junk. The folks that best understand the problem and the underlying technology are the phone companies - problem is they profit from the status quo. So how about a law giving the phone companies 1 - 2 years to address this problem, or face a $1 tax for every junk call they deliver to their customers? This needs to happen with no added charge to their rate payers - I hate paying a fee for even the lame call blocking Verizon offers to avoid something I didn't want in the first place. Of course there are will be an army of lobbyists descend on congress and $10's of millions in campaign cash to make sure this idea never saw the light of day!

What a crock of sh*t!! Hey FTC, how about some help for us cell users constantly getting calls from non-existent area codes, 20 to 30 times a day.  Changing your number or carrier doesn't work, since Obama is funding you do something to help US!

DNC is yet another in the endless list of feral.gov incompetence.
For all the good it does, their taxpayer-extorted 'funding' may as well have been flushed down the nearest toilet.
Oh wait !  It was !

I have the same device ("Digitone Call Blocker") and it was a God-send.
But you're right; that 80 number capacity fills up real fast.

Unfortunately....until the FTC decides to aggressively pursue these telemarketing vultures, a 1000 number capacity won't be enough.

One solution would be for the FTC to establish a series of phone numbers of their own, list those numbers on the DNC list and then track every telemarketer that continues to call after an "opt-out" response.  They should then prosecute the owners, operators and any other principles under criminal statutes with heavy fines and possible jail time for repeat offenders.

    Ha.  That is too funny!

I think I'll try it next time.

Siri is an endless source of amusement if you try to read what she interprets as the word you said when you are texting hands-free.  Every once in awhile I let 'her' message go thru to friends and family.  They know Siri did it and it amuses them.

Gotta amuse yourself some times, right?

    Thanx for the idea!

Since I'm not home during the day, and my landline carrier is a joke as far as call-blocking, and the DNC should have to celebrate their 'birthday' they way I did mine - running (ha! i my condition, running is not an option) to check the caller i.d. every time it rang, in case someone i actually wanted to talk to was calling to wish me happy birthday - I've had my landline voicemail cut off.

When i get home, i check the 'missed calls' and if any of them are 'good' - as in friends and family, doctors, boss - I return the call.  These people know that's what i do, so they usually call me on my cellphone.

Any numbers i don't recognize - especially 'anonymous' or 'blocked call' who call me constantly with different numbers - I come to 800notes and find out how big a scam I missed.

Thanx 800notes!  Love to you all!

Callcentric now offers Telemarketer Block, the Press 5 to be connected, however they would bill the call at 1.5 cents each time if you are on their pay per call plan.  I have enabled.  But still dinged for those teleterrorists trespassing on my phone, Sometimes I disable it and forward certain area codes to politicians.

Century Link in San Marcos, Texas offers Selective Call Acceptance, as well as Do Not Disturb.  AT&T however doesn't believe in Selective Call Acceptance.

Record the call and post it to YouTube!
Ebay sells digital recording devices shipped from Hong Kong with built in 4GB memory, automatically saves the call to MP3.

I use it for my cell phone and home phone (comes with adapter)

10 year anniversary of nothing but political rhetoric and BS. The calls keep coming. This "DO NOT CALL " LIST is a farce. Much like politics and current administration.

Sounds like you are *way* hooked into the grid. How many calls do you get from the "local police"? And why are you seeing a doctor except in an emergency situation? And the town manager???
It's not that we want to see the number/name calling, we want to be able to block them from coming through or from being sold to lists! Who do you think is selling your number onto these lists anyway? One of them is your service provider!

Here's a question...since the GOV has all of this technology to dig through all these phone calls, whey aren't they using some of those resources for this? We're all tired of these BS calls and we've all made our many complaints about these phone numbers but who's doing what about it? So is it safe to think that someone, other than these scammers are make a buck off of this? Possibly! Should we continue to put our "trust" into this DNC list? Not if this is the reward we get for wanting a little more privacy. I answer a at lease 5-10 of these calls a day...at work...and i'm sick and freaking tired of it!!!!!!
