FTC Says National 'Do Not Call' Registry Is Working
In a report filed yesterday morning, the FTC said the "Do Not Call" list is "by every available measure, an effective consumer protection initiative."

- FED UP!!This program is a total waste of taxpayers money! After filing more than 80 complaints in less than six months to the so-called "DO NOT CALL" site and several formal complaints to the FCC, all that happened was an increase in calls from these annoying bums! We finally had our number, which we have used for five years, changed and are still getting calls from telemarketers - but not the same ones. FCC says it takes 30 days on the new number before they can accept complaints. ANOTHER GOVERNMENT FIASCO!!!!!!
- blargh| 1 replyYou do realize they don't investigate every single complaint? In order to do that, they would need a ridiculous amount of employees dedicated solely to investigating complaints. They operate like the BBB, once a phone number or company has received a large amount of complaints, they then take the steps to investigate it. They aren't going to take the time out to keep you up to date on whatever stupid complaint you put in.
I have put all of my numbers on the DNC registry and it works fine for me. Prior to doing this, I would receive 2-3 calls a day. Afterwards, nothing.
Stop putting your phone numbers on MySpace and publicly viewable webpages. That's how they get your numbers. - GrannyHonestly folks - if you get an unlisted number you get very few telemarketer calls. I've had at the most less than 10 telemarketers in the 6 years I've had an unlisted number. I am getting 2 right now but I also have 'call block' - all more than worth the extra fees - cause they just got added.
- bullThe final (scrawling) writin' on the wall; was congress's capitulation to bush's precious immunity for his corporate pals.
Now that these supposedly "patriotic" companies have their ticket punched; we should all be DEMANDING these slackers (congress) make the "immunized" wrongdoers allocute to their crimes. I don't think that's asking too much of them, for the free ride they received. Nobody that's been harassed, spied upon, and/or privacies violated for no apparent reason; can do a g**damn thing about it, anyway. What do they ALL (bush, congress, security, telecoms, et alia) have to hide, if their complicity was so very patriotic?
Don't fool yourself for another second, if you believe ANYONE with access to your private affairs, won't "share" it with entities OTHER than FISA and/or the Patriot (makes me gag thinking just how disingenuous this "law" is titled) Act intended. More than likely, you're a victim, already.
Peace, and good luck. - bullMy apologies for getting a little off subject, above. I'm just trying to explain my point about the collusion involved by these companies (and government) that have no good conscience, or plan, in dealing with the telemarket slammers, illegal spying, or anything thing else they choose to thumb their nose at us all with, and get rewarded with immunity for doing such a poor job of.
Honestly, I implore you all to DEMAND your representatives do something about the lack of personal privacy issues we all want, and expect. The need for national security, is just that; and, not allowing the abuses & excuses that are heaped upon us in every day life, in the name of it (security).
I'll guarantee (and, NO!, not by phone...), if these weasels will ever (truthfully) testify (with their spanking new "get outta jail free" cards) to what's been going on, we'll find that the problem is much worse than we perceive it to be at the moment (and, that's way bad enough). - keyboardsYeah, right. And the Easter bunny and Santa are going to deliver a tax rebate of $25,000 per person on January 32nd of 2009 and deposit it into an interest bearing retirement account that Congress won't be able to touch.
Nothing will ever change because lawyers grow up to be judges and judges grow up to be politicians.....
...wait a minute; there's a flaw in my thinking. Lawyers never grow up! - Maria, FLI just got a home phone from Comcast on July 11th.I still have not given the number, even my friemds, and as of the 15th I have received 3-5 calls everyday!! The first thing I did was get on the DNC list. No, it does not work!!
- WindsorFoxYes it's working, callers and call centers are going out of their way to cover up who they are and how to find them. If the FTC and FCC want to do something right they need to force the telcos to standardize CID info and make it mandatory and mandate that it be correct and not allow it to be falsified. Possibly enact a division of people (like myself) who would volunteer to investigate and leave only the prosecution to the Feds so they can slap more hands. Habitual offenders like Heather from account services should be fined into bankruptcy and spend a little time in prison.
- abbie replies to wrong guy to callYeah, I want to know who is it working for? IT DON'T WORK!!!!! And I'm tired of this crap! FTC need to start putting folks in jail or attack the company owers personal pockets, bwcause fining the company is obviously not WORKING!!!!
- Et AlLately, I've been getting a flood of scam and telemarketing calls to both cell phone and house phone and both have been ON the DO NOT CALL registry for over a year.
So who did they pay to report what they wanted to hear? - bullI'm a fellow cynic, k.b.; just not (yet)to the level you seem to be.
Something has got to give with a congress with an approval rating lower than a rattlesnake (and gw2/shotgun dick) fart. Elections on the horizon...(unless the t.c.'s intend to pay for the [***] attempted re-election by themselves, which they should, after receiving their "get outta jail free" cards for a whit).
Try actually sending an email to your reps, rather than espouse your vitriol upon people trying (and succeeding on some points) to make the hackneyed "change" (i'm guessing you already have, thank you).
(and, after trying to watch (zzzzzzzzz) the "drill now" filibuster today; I become more inclined, by the second, to totally agree with you.)
Next stab @ an solution: you'd think that a national "security" force, that is evidently getting A+ grades regarding their perfomance from someone (themselves), could actually track down some/most of these slammorists, eh? They seem to have no problem singling out a private citizen, with the "patriotic" & "immunized" help of your local, friendly telecom. - stevenw replies to JudyThat's so true! The telemarketers say they are collecting for a charity--some "charities" set up solely as a front--and then only give the "charity" 15% of the donation. They keep almost everything. It's nothing but a fraud. I would never donate to a charity by way of an unsolicited call.
- felonist replies to ashley| 1 replyI also have been getting calls on my cell, got tired of getting calls on my land line, which is on the do not call list,so i keep it unplugged, .Then at the end of 07 i registered my cell phone number which has been the same # for 7 years.
Well,i have been getting phone calls on my REGISTERED CELL ,from 9 different states,i say, some one who has access to that list is selling our #'s for profit. - Sick and Tired replies to wrong guy to callWho the heck is the government trying to kid....the DNC Registry isn't doing jack [***], I get calls everyday and the sad thing is, we have an UNPUBLISHED number and have registered our number on the DNC list....
I'm sick and tired of filing complaints to all those wonderful "Government" agencies who say they'll handle it, only to have them prove themselves wrong.
I'm fed up with my phone being a nuisance rather than a convience FOR ME!!!!!
So who's it helping again and where are they getting their statistics from? - TimWhat a complete joke. Since that "law" went into effect, we still get tons of calls, many from the same agencies who called years ago. Who is enforcing this law? No one. It's a completely toothless law and there's no consequences to this so called law. This law is about making people feel good and telling them what they want to hear, there is really no change in the select harassment of people regarding unwanted phone calls.
