Telemarketers in Mississippi Now Required to Reveal Name & Telephone Number

Mississippi's No-Call program will no longer allow telemarketers to call without revealing their own name and number.

Commissioner Brandon Presley, who as been in charge of the Mississippi No-Call program since it began in 2003, publicly announced the new reform to the No-Call Law June 10.

Presley said he was angry with the misleading methods businesses are using to illegally harass Mississippi citizens.

"Many Mississippians are receiving these unwanted calls," Presley said. "Our investigators don't have anywhere to start if they don't at least have a name."

Companies' telemarketers are now being required by the Mississippi No-Call program to swear an oath and say they will not intentionally block their names and numbers from the residents they are calling.

This needs to be nationwide. I'm tired of people calling with "No Caller ID", "Unknown", and "Wireless Caller" when they are nothing but call centers and to make it worse it does'nt show the phone number so I can't just block them all together.

It's not that they believe this change will "catch all the shady ones," but rather that it creates a new threshold requirement under which telemarketers must operate.  That means that, unlike before, should a telemarketer fail to register, that act itself is a violation of the law, and will at the very least put the telemarketer on the prosecution "radar" of the AG's office, allowing them to shut the telemarketer down without having to prove they made harassing calls.  And as for those telemarketers who want to at least create the illusion of respectability and legitimacy, they must now jump through one more hoop to do so, putting their neck through a leash by which the AG may more easily control them, should they get out of hand.

I think its great news and every person called should be able to know who the person is that called and a number so if they want that Fundraiser to stop calling they can do that. I know people dont always like calls and non-profits are exempt from the do not call list unless they ask that charity calling to stop.We get complaints and people think when they ask 1 fundraiser to stop calling then its all fundraisers, and thats not true.

If someone enters my home when I tell them not to I can shoot them.  The Do Not Call registry should allow me to shoot telemarketers if they ignore it and enter my home telephonically.  Imagine the fun we could have - we could start a club and travel the countryside hunting down the vermin and eliminating them forever.  Write your Congressman and demand a law permitting this - tell them that political callers must also be included!  Okay, I know, but you have to admit it is a delicious idea...

Just got a call on my cell phone today from Mississippi (601-892-3529).  Found out that others were getting marketing calls as well.  I think they were shut down in very short order because when I tried to call the number back, it was no longer working.

If you like to see how someone took revenge on telemarketers, YouTube has one where comedian, Tom Mabe, turns the tables on them.  Do a search on "Tom Mabe, telemarketer pranks" and enjoy.  I think he evoked his own 'Do Not Call' registry in their microcosom. ;-)
