Yeah no need to worry at all! Even if she steals all your tax return $$, it's okay cos she said she works at the ATO :P

I received yesterday a call on my mobile, from a private phone. As I was not able to answer the phone a voice message was left. A person who introduced himself as Adam Young stated he works from ATO and he wants me to contact him on 1300 852 232, and in order to be able to identify myself I should have at hand my tax file number.

Later I called the number and after a message that the call would be monitored for the training purpose a female answered and stated she is from ATO.
She also said I need to identify myself and requested my tax file number, DOB and address.
After I provided her with the above information she told me I have superannuation in two funds and I should call the funds to arrange for the super to be placed with the fund I am currently with.

Called ATO today and they told me it is a scam that implies identiy theft.

As they said my TFN was compromised they required me to apply for a new one.

I received a message from "Emily from the ATO" from this number yesterday and after reading all the above posts there is no way i will be giving my personal information out over the phone and i advise everyone else to do the same.

If this truly is a scam i am writting this so other people do not sucked in or beleive this is true.

You should never give personal information away over the phone, you have no idea who you are talking to!!!

My wife has received two of these calls in the past 3 days. The first from "Adam Young", the second message from a woman, "Alison Holton". The return phone number they give is the same....."1300 852232", which they want her to ring between 8:am & 6:pm South Australian Time.

As far as I am concerned it is BOGUS.  The ATO has always corresponded to us by mail in the past.  If there is any outstanding Super, they can and will mail us again.  

To satisfy my curiosity I will report this to the ATO tomorrow and post their reponse.

I called the actual ATO number and enquired if the number was legit. Turns out it was and it was about lost super. I did read this beforehand and double checked with the ATO whether the call was legit and I suggest that other people do the same since who knows if I'm a scammer too!

I got this message this week - rang the ATO and was told it was an identity theft attempt and NEVER give out TFN. Be warned.

They called again today - different name same number. This time I rang the number - has ATO intro and all stuff about listening for training purposes. I spoke to a woman - when I suggested it was ID fraud she tried to convince me otherwise ( obviously) and gave me supposed ATO phone no.s to ring. I said I had rung ATO and she said I was being ridiculous. When I suugested that if she was ATO she had all my info and to send it to me by mail she hung up !!`

Ok, my partner had a call for me and said I needed to contact the Tax Office and have identity to hand, ie. TFN etc.  The number was 1300 852 232.  However, I started to become suspicious as I couldn't think of any reason the tax office would need to contact me, so I googled the phone number and found all these posts.  However, I then went to the ATO website and contacted them directly to report it.  The person I spoke to said there are scams going around and that he didn't recognise that number.  He did a search on any ad campaigns there may have been and said that Lost Super tried to contact me a couple of weeks ago. He transferred me and I got through to them.  Turns out I did have 3 accounts in the lost super, which you can also find on Superseeker and putting your details online.  So I guess that it may be legit after all, but might be best to contact your local ato office first instead of that number!

Stop trying to steal my identity "anonymous" !!!!!

I got a call today and it's the second one I've had.  After reading people's comments here, I got on the ATO site and went to the Superseeker.  It came up that I had one super fund that had lost contact with me.  My current employer actually uses this super fund, so I am still an active member of the fund.  So as far as it being about non-active super, that is not correct.  The woman I spoke to at the super fund did not ask me for my tax file number, they already have it.  I just needed to update my details with my new address.  It will be interesting to see if I still get calls from this 1300 number now that I have fixed up my details with the super fund......

P.S.  I've not rang the 1300 number at all..... or contacted the ATO

I do - you are a scammer. I got off the phone from the ATO ahlf an hour ago, and they know *nothing* about this.

I'm pretty sure that this is not a Scam - just the ATO being really stupid.

But just to be sure don't bother calling back (just in case it is a scam) just go to https://superseeker.super.ato.gov.au and see if you really do have some lost superannuation.

I did and it turned out I had 2 lost accounts.

Easy!

And rememberer NEVER give out any personal details over the phone unless you a certain about who it is that you are giving the details to.

received a call from "Matthew Dunn"  from the ATO when I said I didn't think legit said to call back on 1300852232. Woman who answered wanted my Name DOB Address and Tax File #

1 post saying this is a scam trumps 1000 posts saying it's legit.

I actually work at the ATO on this particular campainge and we are not boagus. Its ligit and we wont ask for any more details than your dob and address. We are just trying to reconnect people with lost super, no scam intended.

I just called the ATO complaints line and they "checked out" the phone number for me by calling it.  They said it was the lost superannuation team who are doing outbound callouts.  I'm not a very trusting person, so rather than calling the number myself, I checked superseeker and I also have a lost super account.

They also said you can call the ATO superannuation line on 13 10 20.  They said it would be slower, that's all.

I rang this same number and told them i was concerned they were a hox so they gave me another number to ring so i did and then i looked up the ATO website and called that number and they confirmed its a real department BUT dont stress as it is most likely them chasing you down as you have a super account that you have not used in a while and they are trying to give you the info that you can join it with your current super thats what my call was and they knew my tax file number already as i gave them the wrong one and they looked mine up and told me hahaha

Ok, I received the same phone call from a lady late this afternoon claiming to be from the ATO. And after a quick google I've been led to a number of these “Unknown Caller” forums.

A few things to note...

1) I've never once been cold called or unsolicited by the ATO in my entire life as an Australian citizen.

2) This number doesn’t appear to be listed anywhere on either the ATO or the SuperSeeker websites.

3) If the ATO wanted to inform me of lost super (or anything else for that matter) they would do this by mail.

4) Lastly, I'm also very suspicious of some of the comments I've seen from people either claiming to be from the ATO or that this number is somehow linked to the ATO's lost super program i.e. this is an anonymous forum and is not linked to the ATO in anyway. And these messages could be coming from anyone e.g. the scammers themselves, or simply miss-informed people.
