- NimrodThese texts are coming from scammers too stupid to know how phone numbers work in the U. S. and Canada (they may very well be texting from overseas countries).
According to the North American Numbering Plan no valid phone number can have an area code or exchange number (aka "prefix") that starts with a "0" or a "1". This phone number violates that rule on both counts (a "1" starting the area code and a "0" starting the exchange number).
You do not need to ask "Is this a scam?", just looking at the number answers "Yes, it is!"
If you get any call or text where the supposed calling number exhibits any of these patterns (where # is any digit 0-9), you can be assured that the number has been spoofed and the caller is up to no good:
0##-###-####
1##-###-####
###-0##-####
###-1##-####
0##-0##-####
1##-0##-#### <-- This particular number
0##-1##-####
1##-1##-####
Forward unwanted spam/scam texts to 7726 (SPAM) and let your phone service provider deal with them.
That number was set up by the phone companies to combat spam texts and they can shutdown offending phone numbers.
Never reply with "STOP", scammers will not honor the request (they have no honor to begin with) and it only verifies that they have texted to a valid number and a person who reads their texts. It will not STOP the texts and may actually make them more frequent.
Never click on a link in such a text as it may cause malware to be inserted on your phone, and even if it does not, just as with replying "STOP" the scammers will know they reached a valid number. - Anonymous| 1 replyThe area code 141 belongs to Glasgow, Scotland. Sent text to cell phone: FRM: Bnk-Of-America. Contact (856) 861-6031. SUBJ: Your Debit Card is Locked. MSG: RCXOJ2. The number (856) 861-6031 is a SW New Jersey landline. Called/recording answered informing card was locked, press 1 to continue or 2 to end call.
- Caller: Bank Of America??
- Call type: Scam suspicion
- Nimrod replies to AnonymousAs was already pointed out to you in a reply to your post at 141-020-0515 the texts are NOT coming from Scotland.
Just because you found something on the web that states there is a 141 area code in Scotland does not mean that you were texted from there. No doubt, there are 141 area codes in other countries, perhaps the scammers are taking turns sending them to you from different countries in turn, that makes as much sense as your assertion. - post pending moderator approval
