Just got a call from this number, but they did not say anything when I answered, probably because I did not sound old or intoxicated. Judging by other comments this person(s) feeds on taking advantage of people...probably thought I just wouldn't go for it and hung up immediately, but when I call back...it says that I have reached a nonworking number...which is strange

That call is to sucker you into letting him get his hand in your pocket. Never give any information to such a call; especially when you have no idea who they are. Just hang up. If its official, they'll call right back.

I received a call from this number just a few minutes ago from a man who spoke with what seemed to be an Indian accent, and he was clearly reading from a script.  The phone sounded like static, and he told me that the Federal Government wanted to give me 9k for being in good standing with taxes?  Out of curiosity, I said..."Okay....:" He then asked what I would spend the money on, and said what I couldn't spend it on....trying to sound legitimate.....very sad.....$20 Trillion debt and the feds want to GIVE 9K to "people who are in good standing" rather than take 9K????  That's an insult to one's intelligence....after that I hung up because it sounded very sketchy.  It's definitely a scam....

This would not have anything to do with Anthem as the calls pre-date the breach by weeks.  Just a scammer using a random dialer

Heavily accented man claiming to be from Federal Government giving out $9000 federal grants to qualified citizens and I was on the list!   After asking for credentials or other information to verify things he stumbled over his words and I could hear someone coaching him to how to answer in background.  After asking for his physical address several times, he woud not provide it and eventually he hung up on me.  If you search "federal grant scams" his company name  comes up.

It is a scam.
The government does not offer grants to individuals for personal use.
It is a scam ran by off shore con artists to trick you into sending unrecoverable money to them.
They will say you need to get prepaid money cards, like Green Dot and load them with you own money. Once you give the details from the card to the scammer, they clean out the card. You loose your money, you get nothing.

The only legitimate avenue for government grants is through www.grants.gov which is the official US government webs site for grants.

Called and hung up  middle eastern accent

Got a call from a thick accent lady telling me I was getting a Grant for being a Good Citizen. If I gave her my bank act or cc# I would receive 9,000.00. SCAM!!!

just got the call a few minutes ago, I was on the phone with her. Middle eastern accent and couldn't tell what she was saying. I supposedly got 9k but once she asked for bank account I hung up. [***] dat

Got this same call twice - didn't answer, didn't call back.  Glad I found these comments to know what's going on.

Update to previous comment.  I find it interesting that (1) these calls came to my cell phone number (I rarely get unwanted calls on the cell) and (2) these calls came after the data breach at Anthem.

A woman using broken English called my cell # claiming to be a government agent and wanting to give me $9000. When I told her to send me a check she hung up.

The call came 2/19/2015 and I missed answering it. No voice mail was left. Curiously I Googled the number and found this page with all the contributions you all made to describing what this call would have been. Thanks for the info everyone, I have added the number to my block list.

It's interesting what chippietooth said about the Anthem breach.  I also have Anthem and don't receive these types of call, until today.

Why can't Washington take care of their own scammers and fraudulent activities right unbder their own noses?  It is an embarrisment as a nation that these thugs get away with the fraud and flaunt their activities under the noses of America's Congress.  Perhaps, if we had lobbyist to pay them they would do something?

Why?  Because despite what the caller ID displayed, these calls are not originating from Washington, DC. The callers are in a foreign country and use cheap VoIP services such as Magic Jack to spoof US numbers to make it appear they are calling from within the US.  Since the authorities in country the calls actually originate in are slow or refuse to cooperate with US authorities, there is little that can be done to stop them from calling.

Scam. $9000 from "United States" though very heavy accent, couldn't understand much.  No thanks!

My buddy had the same call today and a hour later I got the same call.  The caller about pissed this pants when I told him I also worked for the Federal Government (I work for the VA).  LOL!
