Didn't know the number so I let the machine answer call. Message was from a lady stating she was from the IRS and needed to speak to me ASAP before further action is taken.  This is a SCAM do not return call!  

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

2) Help kill their phone lines. The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). Received the same message as Sharon.  IRS scam trying to get you to purchase prepaid credit cards for payment.  Was recently reported in our local newspaper.

Received the same exact message on my cell. Creeps.

We got a fake call stating they were the IRS and that I owed $7,000 and needed to pay it immediately or I would be arrested!! DO NOT GIVE PERSONAL INFORMATION to anyone claiming to be from the IRS.

I have received multiple calls from this # 202-506-9224 over the last couple months, but I never answer it! Got two calls just today! Man these crooks are relentless >:(

I received to calls from this number and she left a message claiming from the IRS.  Thank you folks for posting that this is a scam.

I got a call today too. They asked for my tax ID and they tell me my address which was wrong and I did not give them my address.  They said the police will come and get me if I don't get back to them.  Usually, the IRS will send you letters if they need you and not call you.

I think we should make them work, just call them and ask them questions and make them go crazy!

Person left message that I must call IRS right away. When I called back the person had a heavy accent and said listen to her or "she slap me in the face". I took the phone to my husband and he heard the same thing.  She said she was from the IRS.  I finally hung up and they kept calling me back and the caller ID said 1911.  

Just started receiving these calls. Thanks for the heads up. We have to be kept aware of any calls of this nature.  Reporting it may be the very thing to help stop these people. Thanks again for all your posts.

This was a computerized female voice stating that they were from the IRS. They claimed I owed money and needed to call back immediately or they would take action. This is a fraud! Scam! Do not fall for it!

Called - didn't answer - left a message but the only thing recorded was "goodbye".

I got this call, and the woman in the recording, Gladys, claimed she was from the IRS (deep southern accent), D.C. area code.  While it was amusing, the better thing to have done was simply ignore the call.   Never Never Never respond to a call like this--the IRS does not initiate any action, or even contact any tax payer or citizen by phone.  The IRS will mail notices, not call.

Do consider maybe getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $60.00 or so.

I think they are now beginning to use American voice actors for the robo parts of their calls.
