- GloriaCaller says their IRS. ??
Really??? - ANonieMouse| 1 replyThis is some coward hiding behind a magicJack device plugged in at some God-forsaken corner of the world where there is Internet service. He's no better than a common criminal using a magicJack device and your fear the same way a common thief uses a toy pistol hidden in the pocket of his overcoat to make a bulge that looks like a real gun.
You can verify that this is a magicJack number by searching for it at http://www.phonevalidator.com .
This scam has been extensively researched at
http://www.pindropsecurity.com/consumer-fraud ... irs-phone-scam/ and it was found that magicJack numbers are frequently used, and many of the scammers are operating out of India. There is even an audio recording of a call returned to one of these numbers and a written transcript of the recording contained in links from the Pindrop Security blog.
MagicJacks are readily obtainable outside of the United States for about $100 US and can come with up to a year of free calling to the U.S. and Canada. In India, see, for example,
http://magicjack.in .
In addition to the regular reporting channels, e.g., the Department of the Treasury, the FTC, and/or your local state attorney general's office, you might also report the abuse to YMAX Corp. I have seen reports that they are pretty good at responding to complaints and may be able to permanently shut off a magicJack device, if necessary, so that it can never be used again.
The YMAX Corp. main web page is at:
http://www.ymaxcorp.com
and their site giving information on how to lodge a complaint is at:
http://www.ymaxcorp.com/contact.html
Note that the "contact" website gives a clickable link to a "live chat" where you can make your complaint. - Mekei in NYS replies to ANonieMouseThanks for posting! Just rec'd one of these calls. Totally bogus but some [***] will respond unfortunately.
- LaurieThis is a scam - the IRS never makes phone calls, don't be fooled - hang up immediately
- BrianWe just got this call today as well from the IRS(?) with threats to call back right away followed by "take care" - bogus!
- BrianSomeone named Heather called as an agent from the IRS stating that we needed to call back right away. Something about attorneys being involved. It's a bogus call that needs to be stopped.
- Caller: US IRS
- Call type: Debt collector
- Andy| 1 replyReceived one of these calls through voice mail, tone of voice was computerized and said it was from Heather at IRS. My prior experience with IRS when tax related was that they would send a letter first, never call. So was suspicious right away. Seems bogus, will see.

•If you don’t owe taxes, call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484.
•You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov. Add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments in your complaint. - MI MomI got a message to call back Heather Gray from IRS at 202-506-9386. I called back and it said something about MagicJack and being a disconnected number, blah blah. I hung up the phone but should I worry about getting a bogus phone bill or any other trouble for dialing the number?
- DebbyThis is the phone IRS scam as reported on the DOJ & IRS websites. It's a recorded/computerized message, woman's voice, strange and halting: "I need you or your retained attorney of record to return the call. The issue at hand is extremely time sensitive. My name is Officer Hatta Gray from Internal Revenue Service and the hotline to my position is (see reported numbers) I''l repeat it (see reported numbers). Don't disregard this message and do return the call before we take any legal allegation against you. Goodbye and take care." I did not call either of the the numbers back. Ridiculous what people will do to part you from your money these days. I did fill out the DOJ & IRS complaint forms and have kept a record of both calls. I've received twice from two different numbers: 202-506-9386 & 202-506-8649.
