- Kristen| 4 repliesLeft a very suspicious sounding automated voice mail that they were the IRS and it was urgent I call back. There is no way I am calling back.
- Rex replies to Kristen| 1 replyThis is a Pakistan based IRS scam (there are also Indian based ones). Do not fall for this. Read http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm
The IRS does not initiate any legal action over the phone. Report it also to your local law enforcement agency. The scammers use voice over IP lines (e.g. magicjack (Ymax corporation). This is always against these companys' terms of use and can lead to termination of their contract. However only law enforcement can initiate the contact if you yourself are not a customer. Ultimately this is a case for the FBI legal attache in Islamabad. If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction (and the NSA can finally be a force for good). - KT| 1 replyJust received the same call from these people a few minutes ago. I could see where someone not savvy about these could be intimidated. Not me, the accent was a dead giveaway. #@()%&!#%
- LAN| 1 replyWe just received a call on Monday July 21, 2014 on our home phone from this 202-506-9761 number. They left a recorded message saying that we or our attorney need to call back regarding an urgent IRS matter. There is NO WAY I am calling back. The IRS does not initiate legal action by phone.
- California JJust received same call. Shady

- North DallasEric @ 202-506-9761 called 3 times, cussed at my child who answered the phone, claiming to be with the IRS. I called back, phone forwarded to a call center, guy with a heavy Indian accent answered. Asked for Eric, not available, asked for supervisor, guy claimed to be a supervisor named Allen Parker, I asked for an ID # 30132324. Wants me to call back tomorrow for Eric. I told him I've dealt with the IRS before and they don't harass people over the phone, he hung up.

- DAKOTA replies to LANI received a call on my cell phone today from 202-506-9761. Same thing, automated voice telling me that I or my attorney needs to call back regarding an urgent matter and not to delay in calling back because they will take legal action. I did call back because I know the IRS doesn't initiate legal action by phone, and there was a recording that the number was no longer in service. Within 5 minutes the line wasn't in service? I really would like to know who is using that phone number.
- A WareMan with accent (perhaps Indian or Pakistanian) left an oddly worded message (maybe they used Bing or Google translator). He said the message was intented for (my name) and he was calling from IRS and that me, my agent or attorney need to call about a time sensitive matter. Then left a whole long message that I didn't understand much of. The syntax he used was often bizarre too. The basic idea was he wanted a call back at 202-506-9761 and an extension that I could not amke out. When I called back I got a busy signal or at other times they answered then a hung up. The next day they called again but didn't leave a message and I didn't answer. Then about 5 minutes later they called again so I answered. It was the same guy claiming to be from the IRS - I laughed and told him I didn't believe him and that he was a scammer. He started speaking in a serious voice and said something about "everyday" and I said - "Everyday scammers like you call - just take me off your call list." So far no more calls.

Dear Senator/Representative XXX
As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to demand decisive action from the FBI, the IRS and other federal agencies against organized crime directed against American citizens from abroad.
As widely reported by local and national media all across the United States and warned about by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (see http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm) a tidal wave of fraud using Internet phones has hit the United States. Millions of dollars already have been stolen by criminals impersonating federal officers from the IRS while hiding in countries like India and Pakistan, where most of the calls originate. There seems to be no end of it in sight.
I have personally been targeted by these scammers but it is the most vulnerable among us that I am concerned about primarily. The scheme is specifically singling out those that can least defend themselves against these crimes, in particular the elderly. I am also worried that given the origin of these gangsters, the money stolen from US citizens may be used for financing of terrorism or other activities directed against the national interests of the United States. But in spite of this clear and present danger to our country and its citizens I have seen no action worth mentioning by the FBI, the IRS or other federal agencies so far.
As a member of Congress overseeing the law enforcement agencies tasked with fighting fraud and ensuring national security, I implore you to make sure that they act on these threats and are given all the necessary resources to target these criminals in cooperation with foreign law enforcement.
Yours sincerely - Maria E| 1 replyReceived a very suspicious sounding automated phone call stating that they were the IRS and it was urgent I, or my lawyer, call back to take care of this very time sensitive matter. Failure to do so would result in actions taken against me. "Goodbye and take care", the voice said at the end! Hahahahaha!!! The number was 202-506-9761

- Gabriel| 1 replyA woman with a thick accent left a voicemail at home which I couldn't understand very well, the only part I understood was to call back to 202-506-9761. When I called back to this number, a man with hispanic last name but with an indian or pakistani accent took my call and told me that I'm being sued by IRS and in 1 hour two officers will be in my house to arrest me and freeze all my assests. Of course is a scam because I paid all my taxes on time all the time. What scares me is that they knew my wife's cell phone number, my home phone number, my home address and he also knew that I filed my taxes jointly with my wife. Where they got this info from?
- Caller: IRS
- Call type: Debt collector
- Renee replies to KristenI just got the exact same thing, could barely understand the message because of the thick accent.
- KHWe received an automated message this morning. Female voice. Not intelligible in the beginning. Something about "- time subsidies" and that it was Officer Cata Gray? (Sounded a bit like category) calling from the IRS. Call the "hotline to my position: 202-506-9761. Don't disregard this message. Return the call before we take any legal allegation against you. Goodbye and take care." Called the number before looking it up online. Took a moment or two to connect to line and then it was busy (3x in a row). I knew it was a scam because we always pay our taxes. I am concerned and wondering if this is a result of the Target data breach or even the Experian credit breach that we're not being told anything about. More info on the US Treasury website.
