- Annoyed| 2 repliesCalled and left half of a poorly recorded message claiming to be IRS agent "Tracy Morgan" and to call back another number before legal action was taken. This number calls all the time. Sometimes 4x a day and at 9:30 at night, but this is the first time any part of a message was left. It's been reported to the real IRS.
- Alfalfa replies to AnnoyedWASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.
Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.
“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country. We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves. Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.
More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.
http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Warns-of-Pervasive-Telephone-Scam - Annoying but msg so bad it is amusing. We do not answer the calls from that # but they continue to pester. They leave what they must think is a "scary" msg. Really?
- Diane replies to AnnoyedThanks! I just got this message too and went online to check up. The womans voice was spooky!
- WarrenI get garbled messages from this number a few times a week and ignore them but can't stop them. I tried to call the local (city) and national offices of the IRS but cannot talk to a person at any IRS Office. Only get a robot asking questions, then being sent to another robot for more questions. I then filled out the form on the IRS web site to report the phone number aa a likely scam, but have not received any response from the IRS. Must be too busy defending themselves for loosing e-mails!
- Call type: Telemarketer
- AnnoyedI just got a call from this number, saying it was the IRS and to call back. It was obviously a machine generated voice. Sketchy enough to look it up on the internet.
Flanders, NJ- Caller: presumably the IRS
- Call type: Telemarketer
- LeaReceived multiple calls from the number 202-506-9860. there is a recording saying that the person is from the IRS and to call back immediately before legal action is taken. Wary that it might be some sort of scam, I called the number from my work phone instead of my cell phone and someone picked the phone up but didn't say anything. I could hear noise in the background and a little kid talking. I hung up after a few seconds. Apparently it is a known scam now but maybe this info helps you in some way.
- Caller: fake IRS
- CindyI received a message that the IRS is after me and I need a criminal lawyer. I gave NO information and was told the police would be at my door within 30 minutes. I called the police department and was told this a SCAM. I tried to call back the company, but was sent to voicemail.
- Call type: Prank
- IrritatedI get numerous scam messages daily offering to lower my credit card interest rate, among other things; I ignore and delete these, although I would love to know how to stop them. However, the other day there were three messages left on my answering machine, one was ad descried above, but the other two were troubling. They were from the same number (202-506-9860), I know this because the caller left the number, I do not have caller ID.
Both messages were identical, so it appears to be a recorded one and the quality of the recording is not very good (the first clue that this is a scam). The caller identifies herself as Heather Gray, although the last name was difficult to make out because of the audio quality. She claims to be an IRS agent and the call must be returned and not ignored, before the IRS takes legal “allegation” action (the second clue that this is a scam). “Heather” concludes the call by saying “have a nice day”.
I am concerned about the aggressiveness (two calls in the same day) and the use of the IRS name to intimidate the recipients of these calls. I have reported it the local DA, who confirmed that this a scam and to report it to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484 and the Federal Trade Commission at 877-382-4345 or at their website and at FTC.gov, use their “FTC Complaint Assistant”- Call type: Debt collector
- G. AndersonRecieved a call from 2025069860. Obviously a recorded mechanized voice left a message stating that she was Officer Heather Gray from the IRS. Told us to not disregard the call, but to call back as soon as possible before any legal allegations took place against us. Really, are these people total idiots.
