recieved a boiler room call advising me that I have just qualified for a $6000 government grant because I was a good citizen and did not get arrested.  All I had to do was to call 202 621-0716 and give her supervisor a secret code number.

I got the same call with my own secret number (starting with "W" for "Washington" and "G" for "grant" as the caller told me).  Have you reported this to anyone?

I just received a call and got the same WG and could barely understand what the woman was saying on the phone, but if I would call back I would go through US Financial Departmetn and receive the $6000.
Does anyone know where they got our information and if this is a scam?

Received a call from an 888 number. Telling me about a $6000 grant from the Government I earned because I was supposedly financially responsible. But I am not. :-) I was to call back on this 202 - number and go to claim it at Western Union. But I have to go there and wire $200 as security deposit, etc. They seemed to rush me on it. I was very pushy for additional explanation from them so they passed me around a few times. They all spoke with Indian and Chinese accents. To me that was unusual in a US Gov office. I called back on the original 888 caller ID number on which they contacted me in the first place and a timeshare sales office answered, to my surprise. But they have someone answering on the 202- number as Government Grant & Finance Department staff. The whole thing was too FISHY in the least. It stunk to the skies of fraud... BEWARE !!!

I got the same call, only I was told I would get $7,000.  It is most definitely a scam - I lit into them but I doubt it really did any good.  If they are going to profess to be from the government, they should at least speak English without an accent.  I had trouble understanding them.

Oh, and I only had to pay $99 to Western Union.  I told them I would rather have a check, but they said they couldn't send a check.  Good thing I wasn't born yesterday...

Got a call yesterday 8/29/11 and today 8/30/11 from an unidentified number claiming that I was selected to recieve a $7,000 grant from the United States Grants and Credit Department. On the first call a very healvily Middle Eastern sounding person asked for the homeowners name, phone number, address, how many children they had, how old they were, and if they had been convicted on any felony. They said the grant was being offered because all of our taxes had been paid and we were not convicted of a felony. The homeowner (my mom) was not home so I took the phone number and code to have her call them back. When she called this number, 202-621-0716, and started asking questions they hung up on her. My mom called the police but decided not to make a report. When they called again today I told them not to call that it was a scam and they continued to try to get information from me. I asked to talk to their supervisor and talked to "Victor Wellce" who said that they would send the money to me in cash if I didn't want to give them my bank information. I told him I was calling the police and he hung up on me. I did make a police report today.

I received a call from this number, said they were calling me from Washington DC, said they were from the US Grants Department and I had been awarded a grant of $7000 that I would not have to pay back.  I was selected from the census and some other criteria.  He gave me my money confirmation # and the ph# to call to claim it.  They way he read the number gave himself away that he had no clue about us customs, he read the number as 2026 (pause) 2107 (pause) 16, with 202 being the area code.

Did the police say they could do anything?  Do you know what number they were calling from?  My Caller ID said UNKNOWN but the number they gave me to call them at was 202-621-0716.

Got a call from 202-621-0716 saying I was getting a government grant for $7000.   I recently applied for a loan from my credit union and applied for a home loan.  Only way they could have gotten my info.  When he called again I told him not to call and that I had called my local police department (which happens to be my employer!)

I recommend you tell them not to call again and that you would be recording any other calls they make to you for your local District Attorney's Fraud Unit.  That usually discourages them.

I was called by someone with a strong asian accent stating he was with the US Government Grants Dept and that I had been selected to receive a $7000 grant  He provided a grant approval # WG1070 and advised to me call 202-621-0716.  I was highly suspicious & wanted to determine source of the call.  (I tried to *69, but the recording stated this phone number cannot be reached.)   So I called the number & a female with a middle eastern accent answered the call stating "US Government Grants Dept".  I did not believe her & voiced my suspicion that this was a scam.  She disconnected.  I have reported this situation to the Federal Trade Commission.
