Identifies themselves as the IRS, states that a legal suit is being brought against callee, and gives a case number. The IRS would send a letter, not a phone call, if such a issue were true.  Scam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Same SCAM as reported above.  The call originated from 1-800-586-5969 with the message that the "IRS was filing a lawsuit.". The robotic voice then said to call 202-657-646.

My 82 year old grandmother just received a call from them and she called back thinking it was real. The guy on the phone was a real [***] to her and told her an officer would come to her house in 45 minutes to put her in handcuffs an bring her to jail if she doesn't want to pay out of court. I CANNOT BELIEVE THESE PEOPLE. She called her accountant who said the IRS would NEVER call. They would send a letter. Is there some way to report or shut these people down? This is CRUEL.

www.irs.gov has a link to report these thieves.  Unfortunately they are in India or Pakistan.

Got the same call from 202-657-6416. It was a recorded message from 800-586-5960.  Figured it was a scam and found these comments. Wish there was a way to stop these jerks. Also recently got a call from someone claiming to be a Microsoft support company, Interactive Solutions, saying my computer was sending error messages to MS. They wanted me to logon and make changes according to their instructions. Right. I hung up and launched Windows Defender to discover I had two trojan apps running in the background. Deleted them. These guys are pretty creative. I feel badly for the elderly or computer illiterate people who get these kinds of phone calls.

I think I've gotten same call from this and another number.  I can't hear the beginning of the message, but it does sound like an 'IRS' type deal, suit or whatever.  This strikes me as crossing the line!

No.  The callers are in India and Pakistan, and as such beyond the reach of US law.  Invest in a call blocker and do not pick up on calls you do not recognize.  Never return the calls!

    Much worse than that--

Total scam.  Originates in either India or Pakistan.   Block and ignore.   DO NOT RETURN THE CALL!

I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone.  US mail only.   IRS does not file lawsuits.   Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter.  But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters.  90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively.  IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes.  IRS has no powers of arrest.    If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job.  IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of  money.  IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone.   IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case.  No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments.  Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but  usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement.    All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals.  All  contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.
