I got a call yesterday from an unknown number. They gave me this number and a code to call and get a $9,000.00 grant. When I questioned them as to why, and they lied they said they had information that I had not gone bankrupt, but knew nothing about me except what I told them. They were upset that I blocked my phone number when I called them. Finally, they said have a nice day and call them when I was more co-operative.

YES on a SCAM.  There is NO grant AND it is ILLEGAL to have to pay for one.   You need to APPLY for one.

Yes it is.   Common grant/loan scam coming out of India and Pakistan.  Ignore and block all 202 area code callers.

Got a call from a blocked number, and was told to call 2026815502 and give them a money activation code and stayed on the phone with girls for about 30 minutes and she told me I would be getting $9,000 from the government a grant but that I did not apply for it and it's a once-in-a-lifetime deal but I would need to go to Walmart and get a $200 security deposit for a legal receipt so I didn't have to pay fines or fees to get the money... I really wish this wasn't a scam because how can you get people's hopes up that they're going to be receiving with me but yet you have to have a security deposit for legal reasons

    Grant scams:

The government does not call people up and offer them free money because you paid your taxes on time, have never been arrested, have paid all your bills, or whatever excuse they can make up.  In order to get a grant you need a valid reason (not one of the above and not just because you need money), you have to fill out tons and tons of paperwork, wait a long time, and might not even get the grant in the end.  If you are lucky enough to get the grant after all that paperwork, they do not ask you to pay taxes, transfer fees, or any other types of fees.  Also, please note that the government would never ask you to pay these so called taxes or fees to some anonymous person using Western Union, Moneygram, or any of the cards such as iTunes cards which is a new favorite among foreign scammers.

The only way to get a federal grant for college is to fill out the form at https://fafsa.ed.gov/.  Any grants are paid directly to the school you specify after their financial aid department has filed whatever papers they need to file.  This way the government knows that the money is going to be used for classes, textbooks, etc.

They have called me several times from an unknown number then gives me an activation code and tells me to call 2026815502. Then they tell me to send them 200.00 and they will refund the money plus send me 9000.00 It bothers me that they have too much info about me.

Got a call from 202-681-5502, claiming they were the treasury department, Gave me a password (which I'm keeping to myself just in case) and told me I could get my $9,000.00 from western union at the local Safeway store here in Burns Oregon, told me to contact them when I got to the parking lot, at which time they instructed me to go to the gift card section and select $220 in Steam gift cards, to purchase them and keep the receipt, as that would be my security deposit and that would the money used to purchase these cards would be reimbursed to me along with the $9,000.00 Thankfully Safeway was familiar with this scam and wouldn't process the sale of the Steam gift cards. They then wanted me to try the same procedure at Rite Aid. I just came home, feeling totally stupid and defeated, I needed the money so badly that I wanted to believe it was real. Now I will be homeless in less than two weeks because I haven't enough to pay my rent.

I kept blocking all calls that came from numbers similar to this one because I could tell it was a scam and they were calling me at least seven times a day. When I told the girl to take me off the list a few minutes later a guy called me back and asked me why I wanted to be taken off the list.  When I told him because it was clearly a scam he first tried to convince me that it wasn't, then he said "F*ck you." then proceeded to very explicitly tell me how he wanted to "F#ck me" and asked me if I wanted to do the same to him. It bothered me very much because he was using my full name while saying these things to me.
I am having my phone number changed.
