That is untrue.
There is a widespread IRS (or CRA) or "tax scam" being practiced by scammers on both USA and Canadian residents.

Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

- Kay| 2 repliesFirst a msg was left from 585-204-2786 in Danville NY that said the IRS was filing a lawsuit against me and for me to call 202-684-3402.
I knew that the IRS was not filing a lawsuit against me and that they don't initiate phone calls, so I called the 202 number on my unlisted cell, it rang about 10 times when a man with an Indian accent answered and I asked him what kind of IRS scam was he running and he said just that it was an IRS scam but guessed I was smart enough to know it was a scam. I told I would be reporting the phone numbers to the IRS. - JackFirst, the IRS NEVER CALLS YOU unless they send you official documentation first through regular mail. Second, when on earth has anyone called the IRS directly and someone picked up without it going through a whole series of prompts? The IRS would also NEVER file a lawsuit against you. First, they ask you to pay. Second, they offer you a settlement or a payment plan. Third, they would garnish your wages if you do not respond after about a half-dozen letters. Additionally, if you do speak to someone from the IRS, they identify themselves with their first name and employee number. Also, in 30 years of speaking to the IRS, I have never spoken to anyone with an Indian accent.

- Virginia Beach DetectiveCall from 202-684-3402 came in on the Virginia Beach Crime Solvers tip line. Recording said that this was the final notice for IRS tax owed and to call this number.
Called the number back and male with accent said "hello". I told him I had a message to call the IRS at this number about money I owed. He said that he did not need money, liked my lips, wanted me to come kiss him...repeated request a couple times. I then asked him where he was and he gave me the address to the IRS building in D.C. Told me his name was Officer Joy Marley. Claimed he had seen me twice (at a specific address) in Virginia Beach.
I got off the phone with him and filed the complaint at http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml.- Caller: IRS
