[***] scammed my 74 y/o grandma out of $3,000-$4,000 (US Dollars) in Google play, eBay, etc gift cards. Said his name was Benjamin with the secret service, and that someone took out a loan in my grandmas name for $15,000 and she needed to pay it back. Yelled at my grandma and made her cry, and that she was absolutely not allowed to tell her family or she would immediately go to federal prison.

You don't know how much she was allegedly scammed?  Certainly sounds like a fake story to me.

My mom and I literally just found out about it yesterday night. Still going through all my grandmas bank statements, credit card statements, and cash receipts she used to buy all this, so we’re still figuring out exactly how much she lost. 3-4000 is a rough estimate of what we think she spent. Believe it or don’t, I’m just sharing my story to hopefully save another family from dealing with the same situation.

How did you connect all that to this phone number? If she bought gift cards, it wouldn't be on the receipt or statement.

We looked through her call history through our phone carriers app. Knew when the last time he called was and roughly how long the call was. He’d keep her on the phone while she drove to Walmart to get these gift cards for him, giving him the numbers as soon as she left.

Rings of some truth - there are scams like this, Kitboga has covered several on them on his YT channel in detail - right up to staying on the phone while the mark goes to get the cards.

I would be interested to know how the scam started, but it is just possible Gran did not want to talk about it since she could be embarrassed/ashamed. I am rate this as "could happen" and just wonder if it happened to this poster's Gran.

I wonder about the phone number, more often these are run from India and they are using toll-free numbers for initial contact with the mark.

Wow, he's been busy this week. He got my mother for about the same amount. Benjamin Albert had her driving all around for gift cards as well. My daughter called him from a texting app. Wasted his time and hassled him. Didn't do anything but I can honestly say I felt better.

Interestingly this number was put in a listing on an e s c o r t site in Nov. 2022.
I guess someone's grandkid wasn't happy with the service that grandma somehow paid for?
