These are criminal extortionists operating in overseas boiler rooms using VOIP to alter their identities and locations and out of the reach of US law enforcement.

If someone calls saying he's an IRS agent and demands that you send money immediately, hang up.
It's a phone scam.In fact, it tops the IRS "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams this year, and it's been surging in recent months, the agency said Thursday.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.

By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and new immigrants with things like arrest, deportation or the loss of their driver's license if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.

Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said.

They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card.

Once they make their threats, the scammers have been known to call back and again disguise their caller ID so it appears they are calling from the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Or sometimes when they call, they may say you have a refund due and ask you to provide personal information so you can claim it.

The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all. And the agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.

If you get what you suspect is a scam call, report it to TIGTA through its Web site or call 800-366-4484.

These guys just called me... However, their information is all backwards; the lady had a mild East Indian accent and tried to verify my information, but as soon as they recited my "address", I knew things were wrong... I have my own apartment and my registered address with the real IRS is still there, but I also have had some stuff sent to my girlfriend's apartment while it was recently undergoing a fumigation. Plus here's the kicker... Since we plan to move together in a new town for a job she's starting next month, I have placed a job wanted ad on Craigslist saying I'd like to find a job in that area... So when they verified my address, they recited the street name and apartment number of her address, then the city, state and zip code of the job want ad. I said "you know, the address is all mixed up, so I feel like this is a scam". She got irate and said something I didn't quite understand and hung up.

I received about 10 calls on 1/26/2015. They didn't leave any messages first, but they left a message eventually. One of the scammer, Dona, with a Federal Investigation Company that they invested and required me to respond them back immediately. They would give me a warrant if I didn't respond them back in 30 min. I knew it was a scam, but I just wanted to make sure. I called my local FBI and Federal Government Trade to report it. My local FBI agent told me not to give information to scammers. Well, I did report to my local FBI and other federal agents that I hoped to arrest those worthless trashes soon. They were nothing but harmed our society.

I just got a call from them this morning. I know its a scam but curious on what they are going to say. This woman she is an IRS agent and that a warrant is issued on my name and I will be arrested in 72 hours on tax fraud. They are getting better at this, they even said that they mailed me 2 documents in Nov and Dec and now they are calling. She even gave me a badge number and go on and on about homeland security and how I would lose everything I own if I lose my case ..... then she ended up asking me what do I have to say for myself. I was surprised she did not ask me for money right away. I was driving and finally just hanged up. She even tried to call me back ... relentless. I hope they get arrested soon ...

Same scammer, well, at least a lady with the same middle east or Indian accent.  She called a month ago once (with a different number 203-347-5707).  I told her what she said doesn't make sense, and she got mad.  I hung up and called the number back, it went to a voice mail and the greeting was very residential. Today she is calling again with this number.  Very annoying.

They just called 3 times in a row. Finally I answered and the lady said there's a warrant out for my arrest. I had already looked up the number between calls & knew it was a scam. I told her I'm aware of the warrant & she can contact my lawyer. The lady started screaming at me in broken English and hung up.m

They even said that they mailed me 2 documents about it...... I felt so confused and called IRS contact service, IRS told me that it must be a phone frame.

It just happened to me, same deal, same 2 documents, except it took a while for them to get to the part about the money, they are getting better by the day, they take a longer time to talk about the arrest, they don't mention what exactly you did, they only have whatever your online resume provided them with.  They refuse to disclose any other information, because they don't have it.  they claimed they sent me the documents but to the wrong address.  They basically had me all worked up and only then the supervisor talked to me and he said I should go get some prepaid check and police will show up and scan the money off of it.  Police won't show up obviously, the money will go through when you read the numbers off of the check to them.
