- canoewas a screened call and no voice mail. But is seemed famaliar.
- Caller: free press?
- bowhy the legislation does not allow phone company to block selected calls at the request of a phone service subscriber... a consumer should have right to decide what he/she is paying for...
- bo| 4 repliesWhat's a purpose of this (and such) website(s) if thousands (millions?) complaints can change nothing? NOTHING!!!
I am a victim too. Noone could help me to deal withe the problem of these annoying calls. My phone company (MTS) is helpless. They proposed to change my phone number and if I pay a bit more, my number can even be unlisted! What a generosity! And obviously no guarantee the number will not end up with telemarketers again.
Crooks are winning and authorities are helpless? Why a law abiding citizen cannot buy a service he wants? Why it is a package deal? Pay for a phone service, you will be harassed for free?
Why phone companies are being forced by the law to sell services they do not want to sell and clients do not want to buy? What's the problem?
Finally I was forced to turn my ringer off and I only reply to messages left on my answering machine. Problem solved? Really? - Elspeth replies to bo| 3 repliesWell, the purpose of THIS website is for people to post their experiences relating to calls received - whether they be unknown/spam/scam or even (sometimes) legitimate and wrong numbers. Posts made can help others know who is or may be calling and how to deal with spammers and scammers.
You may want to look at buying a call blocker - Google "call blockers" - you can get a good one for $60 or less. Or you may want to have your telecom provider block numbers for you - however, as you may have guessed, this comes with a monthly charge. Is it right that people have to even buy call blockers/call blocking phones/pay for monthly call blocking? No, however those are three ways that may help you deal with such callers. - bo replies to Elspeth| 2 repliesthis website appears to be a place to vent frustration rather then to provide tool to deal with spammers and scammers...
may be I am missing something... does anything constructive happened to solve problems reported by complaining people as a result of their complaints?
I would understand if the domain owners, armed with a collection of complaints, would at least try to reach politicians and try to change the law governing this sick situation... a single person cannot do anything, but somebody having documented harassment cases could try... is there anything going to happen in this matter? ever? - Elspeth replies to bo| 1 replyThis site provide tools to deal with spammers and scammers - see the articles in the site menu ------> to the right. Oftentimes, posters are given links to government sites (like the FTC, for example) tied to a particular question they might have about dealing with debt collectors, or how to know if the caller is legitimate or not, or how to dispute a debt's validity. It's a difficult enough task for the various government agencies to track down and prosecute spammers and scammers in America - and more so if they're located overseas. When one boiler room closes, another one opens up elsewhere.
When people take the time to inform themselves about scams and spam - by posting and reading other posted material at this forum - the harder it is for the scammers to find easy victims. So, in a sense, yes, something does happen. Informed people are not as likely to fall for a spammer's spiel. They are also not as likely to allow themselves to be scared or intimidated into paying something they do not owe. Or if they do owe money, they are more likely to make sure that the caller complies with the FDCPA and mails proof that they owe that money to the caller. Then they will, in turn, pass that information on to others who may also be receiving harassing calls. As the saying goes, knowledge is power. - bo replies to Elspethyou are perfectly right about cases you are talking...
I am in Canada and, to my knowledge, I am able only to:
- learn to live with these calls 24/7, or
- have no phone at all, or
- turn the ringer off and respond to messages left on my AM...
I don't see any other possibility... :(
may be there is a possibility of connecting my landline to my Mac... this way I may better screen calls... may be... I have to explore this route... - darnkatWhile newspapers are excluded from the DNC, they still have to remove you from their calling list if you ask them. I have requested they remove me and the calls stopped for a couple of years. They just restarted. I will ask them to remove me again and if I receive another within 3 years, I will report them to CRTC. I have reported them before and will do it again.
