Identifying an "IRS" Phone Scam
Identifying an "IRS" Phone Scam
The IRS recently issued a warning for the public to be on alert for phone calls from bogus "IRS Agents". Generally, these calls claim that the taxpayer has unpaid taxes which must be paid immediately. The caller will provide a bogus IRS employee number, demand immediate payment in a threatening tone and will try to trick the taxpayer into providing sensitive social security and bank account information. What makes these scammers especially dangerous is how they present themselves when calling. Not only are they modifying caller ID to make it appear they are actually calling from the IRS (frequently from "Area Code 202"), but they seem to know a lot about the taxpayer, often including correct address information and the last four digits of the taxpayer's social security number. This adds credibility to their scam. Unfortunately, these fraudsters have "collected taxes" from far too many unsuspecting taxpayers.
Peterson Sullivan wants you to be aware that these calls are not legitimate and that under no circumstances should any private information be shared with the scammers. To help clients, prospects, and others, below is a list of ways to identify that you are being targeted. These include:
If you have not previously received a written notice via regular mail from the IRS, then any call is not authentic. It is IRS' policy to first mail a written communication to a taxpayer prior to initiating any telephone contact.
A caller who indicates you must pay taxes immediately without providing any chance to question or appeal the amount they say you owe is not legitimate. The IRS always provides taxpayers with at least one opportunity to question or appeal taxes said to be owed.
If the caller requires that you use a certain payment method, such as a prepaid debit card, then it is a scam call.
The IRS never asks for sensitive financial information over the phone, such as your bank or credit card account numbers. If the caller is asking for this information, they are not from the IRS. Further, an actual IRS employee would already have access to your full social security number, not just the last four digits, and would not need to ask you to recite your full SSN.
If the caller threatens to bring in local police or other law-enforcement to have you arrested for not paying immediately, it is not a legitimate call. The IRS never makes such threats in an initial contact.
Remember, the IRS does not currently use unsolicited telephone calls, email, text messages, or any social media to discuss your personal tax issues.
