Someone called today saying they are from the IRS.  They have a really heavy indian accent.  I could barely understand them.  They said it is Urgent that I call.   Something about my taxes filed with a discrepancy.

Total scam.  Originates in either India or Pakistan.

IRS does not file lawsuits.   Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter.  But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters.  90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively.  IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS has no powers of arrest.    If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job.  IRS does not cold call anyone and ask for money. IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case.  No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments.  Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but  usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement.    All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals.  All  contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.

Heavy Indian accent. Call came this morning.   I told him I was reporting this number to the IRS. Cut him right off and he backed off. Then I hung up. I know IRS only contacts through the mail because I have reported other hoax callers to the IRS.

    What the??
Call claiming to be Agent Michael Black from the IRS and that's about the only thing you can understand...very heavy Indian accent. I know IRS doesn't contact you by phone.

Some guy with a clearly thick Indian accent calling himself "Agent Steve Johnson" (hahaha) from the IRS left an "urgent message" on my voicemail about a "discrepancy" in my tax return and that I needed to call him back as soon as possible to avoid legal action.

Which was strange, since I haven't even FILED my tax return yet!

This is an obvious scam by some real idiots overseas, but they'll likely fool some people into somehow handing them over money, so they're still dangerous.
