- MC| 1 replyHuge Scam. Left an automated message claiming to be the IRS, saying " Consider this your final notice, you a being sued by the IRS," and instructions to call back immediately. When I called ( out of curiosity), a man with an Indian accent answered saying "IRS", and instructed to give my phone number. When I told him I was pretty sure the IRS wouldn't call my house and leave a message on my answering machine. He said "if you dont think this is really the IRS, hang up right now, I have many work to do". and hung up on me. When I tried tocall back, there was no answer.

Do consider maybe getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $50.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number. - ViolinfrmtxReceived a message on my answer machine. It was a recorded message saying they were from IRS and it was my last notice and since I had not responded earlier, IRS was filing suit against me. I googled the number and found the information posted from others about the scam.
- Cathy RyanThe message stated that the IRS was filing a law suit against me. I pretty much figured out it was a scam because I'm savvy about taxes, and I know the IRS would never contact me that way telling me such an important thing. Further, it was a canned message. I called the number twice, both time it was busy. After that I was sure it was a hoax. Couldn't believe I received such a call. I must say it scared me when they said that...and before I'd thought it through I tried to call the number to see what it was about. Thank God for the busy signal. I knew I should never get a busy signal from the IRS.
- Caller: Did not say.
- RochelleAutomated voice claiming to be IRS and that they are filing a lawsuit against me.
- Caller: Fake IRS
- Call type: Debt collector
- MargaretI got an automatic message telling me to call this number because the IRS had a lawsuit on me. The person I reached was very professional-sounding and detailed about the matter. It was also scary because he spoke of garnishing my paycheck and taking away my driver's license. He said an officer would come to my house to collect a"federal tax payment voucher" that I would have to get--within 48 hours, etc. etc. What I did not know is that the IRS will never call you at home to collect from you, and that it takes months before the IRS actually gets to the point of collecting, after repeated written, mailed notices.
It was all incredibly elaborate, and the person even gave a fake ID number to make himself sound more authentic!
