Caller said "Hi Grandma". I said who is this.  He said, Don't you know your grandson.  I said Tell me who you are.  He hung up.

First clue: no one calls me Grandma.  Second clue: my oldest grandson is five.  Third clue and fourth clues, he agreed he was coming home to the wrong hometown and had already contacted Mary Ellen who I made up on the spot.  Hung up when I told him I worked for the local sheriff's department.

Same thing; he called at 5:50 this morning saying 'Hello Grandma, it's your oldest grandson'.  Well, I only have one grandson and I'd recognize his voice anywhere.  He finally hung up when I wouldn't play along with his scam.
