I was left a message to call this number.  I haven't lived in IL since 1988, and live in Dallas currently.
It seems like you would get something a little more official than a "recorded" message to call them back.  Regardless, I have not returned their call, and don't plan to.

Calls about 3 - 5 times per day and just hangs up.

I received a phone call from this phone number too, stating that the website was tax.Illinois.gov
wondering if this is a phishing scam or the real deal, there are indications for both. Does anybody have any idea if this is real or not?  The website certainly did not look real

According to other posts this supposedly is the Ill Dept. of Revenue, they called my cellphone I NEVER give out this number, plus they left no message AND it's Saturday also to the best of my knowledge tax agencies don't call you they only send letters in the mail

SCAM

Calling my cell phone every hour, never leave a message they just hang up; my strong suspicion is that this is a scam. If it was real I would have received a letter in the mail.

Received two calls from this number, the first time they hung up, the second time left a message stating they were the IL. dept. of revenue concerning money owed and directed me to the web. site. I will wait for the letter, this most likely a scam.

Actually...I checked this out and this is the number for the Illinois Dept of Revenue.  They just called me today.  I went to their web site and sure enough, that number is one of the numbers they use.
In my case, they were looking for my annual ST-1 Form (it's for sales tax collection).   I don't collect sales tax from my customers so I often forget to file the form. as "0" collected for the year.

If you don't owe the State of Illinois any unfiled forms or unpaid taxes, then don't bother to call them back, I guess.
If you owe them money, however, they will send you written notice.

4 ) Scam? Collection agency?
5 ) send Letters.. not make phone calls ?

I received a call today from 217-785-2698 with an automated message that I owe tax amount and I have to pay. When I checked this in Department of Revenue, I see the number displayed. So, do we need to think this is not a fraud number ? If this is correct number why an automated message is sent on Saturday ?

Fake IRS scam

Called twice within 10 minutes of each call. Rings twice. No message.  Says ‘potential scam’ on screen; Springfield. IL on screen.

I honestly think it’s fake!! Like it’s a scam. Been tryna contact them and nothing added up. I’m over it

I think it's a scam likely but trying to perfect it to be real. If it works fine with the and not not nothing for them to loss.

I just called the number, and it is the State of Illinois Income Tax Department. They were nice. They checked my account and there was no outstanding balance. It came as a spam on my phone but actually it's not. It is safe to call.
