This phone number is a SCAM.  I got a call from a FAKE IRS person
saying I was in danger of going to prison because of tax fraud.  I was
told to call this 240 number to "settle the account."  So if I were gullible,
I'd call that number and give them my credit card because I was so
afraid.  Well I'm not, so I didn't.  FAIR WARNING, this is a fake IRS
    scam!

This phone number is a SCAM.  I got a call from a FAKE IRS person
saying I was in danger of going to prison because of tax fraud.  I was
told to call this 240 number to "settle the account."  I called the operator at CenturyLink he confirmed the number to be bad. The number came in as 740-555-0158 and then says to call 240-232-2197. The operator also said if a number comes up as a 555 number it is FAKE, do not call.

    scam!

Just got a call from 412-555-0128 I did not recognize the number so I let it go to VM. When I reviewed the voice message it stated that I was in danger of going to prison because of tax fraud.  I was told to call this 240-232-2197 number to "settle the account." So I logged onto this site to see if others had gotten such a call. I discovered others had recently been called.
Thanks 800notes for keeping me informed of such calls.

Same as everyone else.  Doesn't even say IRS...treasury dept and that "you have tax fraud against you".  Caller ID came up as directory assistance in Puerto Rico.  Same "badge #". 4165.  I feel sorry for older people that could possibly believe this.

Just got the same call from 662-555-0151, called the 240-232-2197 and was told I would be arrested tomorrow morning, that I better call a lawyer now, that I was going to jail for years because I did not reply to an IRS notice sent 3 weeks ago (which of course I never received).  I told him I did not owe any taxes, and got a refund last year he said that's what everyone says.  He then told be I owed $1100 from an assessment audit of the last 9 year's returns, and that I needed to pay $2000 by tonight to stay out of jail.

Rec'd a VM from the US Treasury (ha ha what a joke) 7:15 this evening.  The recording stated a badge # of 4165 and that I needed to call 240-232-2197 immediately because a tax fraud has been filed against me.  If I didn't respond immediately, I would be arrested.  Of course I know this is a scam but wanted to toy with them and called the number several times, however, it wouldn't go through.  People, please understand the IRS or the US Treasury would NEVER place a call like this, it's nothing but a scam.  I feel sorry for the elderly who may fall for this.

Got a call from a female with a strong British accent detailing I am a target of tax fraud and to call their number to settle the account.  This person must be the dumbest scammer yet as to call someone from their landline and leave a voice message with a return phone number for me to call back.  Yeah, right.  I wasn't born yesterday and they must think I'd be scared to call them back.  This is a second attempt from a fake IRS agent in the last year.

Wonder if the lady has a Green card?  I've filed with the FTC, but these scammers will be long gone before anybody gets to them.  The caller ID said DIR ASST BC and 1-604-555-0145.  The callback was 240-232-2197.  The exchange code of 555 is a giveaway.  The numbers 555-0100 through 555-0199 are deliberately never assigned in North America so they can be used in movies, TV shows & the like.  The Area code indicates British Columbia, but I don't think the Feds are outsourcing Tax Fraud prosecutions (yet!)

️ There are no Magistrates in the USA!

Actually, there are.  They certainly exist in the Federal Court System.  See at:
    http://www.uscourts.gov/Common/FAQS.aspx
"Q: What are federal magistrate judges?
A U.S. magistrate judge is a judicial officer of the district court and is appointed by majority vote of the active district judges of the court to exercise jurisdiction over matters assigned by statute as well as those delegated by the district judges. The number of magistrate judge positions is determined by the Judicial Conference of the United States, based on recommendations of the respective district courts, the judicial councils of the circuits, and the Director of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. A full-time magistrate judge serves a term of eight years. Duties assigned to magistrate judges by district court judges may vary considerably from court to court."

In other words, they are judges with limited powers less than those provided by Article III of the Constitution.

While Magistrate Judges are quite real, what our foreign scammer fiends (meant literally and not as a misspelling of the word "friends") say about them is often so dumb as to elicit uncontrollable spasms of laughter.

Actually Nonie I have to correct you on that.  The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has elected magistrate judges that preside over small claims court  and take care of summary matters as well as preliminary hearings and set bail.  They have elected Constables that transport prisoners, serve some warrants, and also serve court papers.
