- Alfalfa replies to Alexandr AquilinoThis is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
Read this investigative report ABC News did on this scam:
Hundreds of thousands of cash-strapped Americans have been targeted by abusive debt collectors operating out of overseas call centers suspected of links to organized crime in India, law enforcement officials told ABC News.
The calls are part of a massive scam, one that appears to target struggling Americans -- especially those who have gone online to apply for payday loans. Armed with personal information from those pilfered applications, the threatening callers, who claim to be debt collectors poised to initiate legal action, have managed to pry loose millions of dollars from their victims -- even when the victims never owed money in the first place.
"This is what we call a phantom debt collection scam," said Jon Leibowitz, the chairman of the Federal Trade Commission. "It's a very pernicious and innovative new fraud."
Working through call centers in India, the commission estimates that the criminals have dialed at least 2.5 million calls, persuading already cash-strapped victims to send them more than $5 million. Some have reported receiving dozens of calls per hour. They are victims like Cindy Gervais, of New Orleans, who went online for a quick loan when her husband's car was hit by a driver who didn't have insurance.
Even though she paid the loan off, the so-called "phantom" debt collectors with Indian accents began calling to say she still owed money.
"He more or less told me that if I didn't pay, they were going to have someone on my doorstep to arrest me," she told ABC News. "And that they were going to contact my place of business, and tell them what kind of person I am."
At first, she said she resisted. Then the calls became more frequent, and started to ring on her cell phone, and at the grocery distribution company where she had worked for 27 years.
"I was more or less in panic mode because he told me there would be someone before noon at my place of business to arrest me and take me to jail," she said tearfully. "So I agreed to pay him."
After receiving scores of complaints, investigators with the FTC said they began tracking the calls, and following the payments. They alleged the payments led them to a California company run by an Indian-American named Kirit Patel, and that such scams would not be possible without American front men.
"I would say that all roads of this scam, or many of the roads of this scam, lead back to Mr. Patel," said the FTC's Leibowitz.
ABC News tracked Patel for weeks, from the suburbs of San Francisco to Austin, Texas.
Patel refused to talk. But his lawyer, Mark Ellis, said he believes it is far too early to pass judgment on his client. Ellis, a Sacramento-based attorney, told ABC News that Patel was hired for a nominal fee to set up an American shell company, and had no idea what the call centers in India were doing.
"I can tell you, he was as snookered by the people in India as anybody," Ellis said. "He's a 69-year-old man who is nearing his retirement who thought all he had to do was set up some corporations and everything was on the up and up. He's completely dismayed that he has become the lightning rod of this entire problem."
A close friend of Patel's also defended him in a brief interview at his home, saying Patel was not trying to defraud anyone -- he was just an unwitting, bit player in a larger scheme.

You are not in legal trouble with this guy or a client of his. If you call him he will give you a chance to buy your way out of the fake legal trouble. He will demand lots of money, and he will continue demanding money until you catch on and stop paying him.
Don't give him any money. Don't give him any banking information. Stop answering his calls. - Linda| 1 replyThe guy called me with a heavy accent. He told me that I was in trouble because I had not paid my taxes and I was close to going to jail and that this call was recorded for security. I told him I didn't owe taxes, I always got taxes back. He said it was from 2010 and did I want to take care of it. He said I could go to the Idaho tax office and see that my name was on the list. I told him I would do just that. He said I didn't have time to do that and did I want to take care of it. I knew by then it was a scam but wanted to see what he had planned. I said I did want to take care of it, did he want me to pay him over the phone? He said no - he would transfer me to the IRS treasury department. Someone else got on the line, also with a slight accent asking how can I help you. At that point I just hung up. How did he know my name? He kept calling me Miss Linda

- JackThis heavy-accented caller identifying himself first as "James Wilson" and later as "James Huggins" called about an "important issue" that he was not too specific about. He used the threat that if I ought to get back to him and make sure I do it through my attorney.
I'm glad I looked this scam number up. What I cannot understand is how he got mine. - MikeNot an hour ago I received a call from this number, some Indian in a CALL center (obviously, you could hear dozens of Indians in the background) asking for me. I told him I was MY son, to see what he wanted. He then told me that "Your dad is in serious trouble with the US Government" and that I was being sued for some reason and that I needed to have my "dad" call this number and talk to some guy named John Schnieder.
This thick voiced Indian seemed NOT to know the reason why, but I was to call and talk to this "representative" of the US Gov right away and take care of this back issue. - TamianthReport these calls to the real IRS Here:

- lorie| 1 replyThis person just called me and said that there was a law suite against me and I was to call Jason Snyder at 2532164397. I didn't call it I looked up the number and this is what I got.. They have called my phone 3 times already .

- gms replies to lorieHad I thought quick enough to look up this #, it would have saved me from a lot of stress wondering what I did wrong. A law suit in my name? Wow. Thankfully, my son checked it out and put me at ease. Now I was ready to have some fun with these creeps. I answered their call after the 3rd time and spoke with Jason snyder. I played along and was really proud of myself until he put me on hold to speak with "a higher authority" to see if I could pay $3000. While on hold I called my hubby from another phone and wanted him to listen in. Guess what? I wasn't on hold and he called me out on it. I told him I was reporting him to the attorney generals office. His first reply was "I wouldn't do that" and then he laughed and laughed which really infuriated me. Needless to say, nobody came to my door to arrest me as he said and I didn't need to go to 7 11 for a "voucher" to wire $ to their PayPal acct. Unbelievable.
- Dianna williams| 2 repliesThis number called me and said I owed back taxes for the amount of 2836.45. Said I would go to jail for 6 months with no bond. Said they worked for the IRS. Indian accent. Said his name was Kevin smith and his employee number was 86530. I have a voice mail saved. I called the IRS and I do not owe them any money. This scared me a lot. Please do something about this.

- Deidra FrizzellThis number has called me many times I just hung up. But today they called my mother. As I'm listening to what they are saying to her I automatically new it was a scam. They told her if she did not pay them right now they would send the cops to her house to arrest her and take her to jail for 6 months. She was freaking out. My mother is a good woman doesn't own anyone anything. So when me and my brother convinced her it was a scam. I called the number and told them I had a voicemail stating I needed to call them. He asked my name I told him. He then told me that I owed money and blah blah blah. So I then told him I was lying I didn't have a voicemail from them I just wanted to show my mother that you were actually a scam. They hung up on me.

- Rochelle| 1 replyI have had this number calling me since last Friday. His name is Jason Tylor from the dept. of legal affairs. Last Friday he said he was putting a warrant out for my arrest because I refused to pay $1942.00. I said go ahead. Then the guy called me on Memorial Day with the same exact voicemail. Apparently he forgot that he was putting a warrant out for me.... Last time I checked the IRS is closed on Memorial Day. He just called again. I did not answer.
It's just ridiculous! I have reported the number. I wish authorities would handle this. It's harrassment!!- Call type: Debt collector
