- Greg| 1 replycaller now claiming to rep the Legal Affairs office at US Treasury. Claims to be a process server and tells me to get in touch with the officer Keid Nelson; I call and get an answering machine. Didn't leave message. No attempt to get PII or money from me.
- Mike in MD replies to GregThe job of obtaining personal information amd attempting to extort money would have been that of the other member of this scam duo, "Officer Keid Nelson". Process servers never call in advance and any issues with Treasury would be initially told to you via US Mail.
- Barb Kelkie replies to Dianna williamsI received a call also! Said his name was Keith Nelson ( foreign) said there is a warren tout for my arrest . When I confronted him about never receiving a certified letter he hung up on me. I reported him to the police.
- ValerieI received a phone call today and a man with an India accent told me that he was from the Department of Legal Affiars of the US Treasury. Legal action was being brought against me. If I didn't call this number back suit would be filed against me and I would need to hire an attorney ASAP. I am glad that I decided to check this out on the web before I called the number back. I knew that there was no way I was in trouble with any Government office, but it did freak me out just a bit.

- AnonymousThese people are the worst kind of scum, so I have come up with a minor solution. I have a voice line through the computer that has no personal identification information attached. Using this number I have set it to redial 2532164397 continuously for the next 6 hours. Hopefully this will tie up some of there lines so others are not bothered by any unwarranted phone calls.
- Caller: some dumb morons in India
- Call type: Debt collector
- CindyThey just left a threatening message on my answering machine...The message terrified my daughter! I've reported it to IRS at http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/ IF they call again, I will let them know I've reported them and they can expect me to go after them... I used to work in a tax preparation office - I know my taxes are in line!
- SMI got a recorded message from a man named Steve with a heavy, broken accent, telling me that there was a legal action filed against me, and that failure to respond would be considered a second evasion from police authority, and would result in a criminal lawsuit against me. He gave me a number to call him at, which I disregarded. I stayed on the line, and the message just repeated in a loop. I didn't bother calling back - I'm pretty sure police don't send threats through vague, recorded messages.
- RSGot a number of calls from this number claiming 2nd attempt to reach me and if I ignore the call then it will result in legal action initiated by the US TREASURY. The caller has such a heavy accent it's hard to understand and completely ridiculous. I'm not going to waste time calling back it's clearly a scam!
Go ahead and initiate your legal action scam artists!- Caller: Washington call
- NOT A SUCKER !| 2 repliesI received a call from Sally Martin claiming to be from the Treasury Dept. and that I owed $2800 from last years taxes. I told her I use turbo tax! That it was impossible! She said if I didn't pay that she wouldn't be able to stop the processing of a warrant and I would spend at least 6 months in jail plus have to pay even more in fines..... It was scripted call. I asked her how many people fell for her crap and she replied that someone was going to be on my door step to take me to jail very, very soon. Then I told her " ya know lady you certainly have balls to think that people would fall for this stupid stuff. Shame on you. You embarrass me as a human being !" Then she hung up....I can't wait for another call .

- Alfalfa replies to NOT A SUCKER !WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.
Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.
“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country. We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves. Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.
More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.
2) Help kill their phone lines. The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)
3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf).
