Better Business Bureau has issued a national alert about phony debt collectors that are calling consumers nationwide and claiming that they have defaulted on a payday loan and will be arrested if they don’t pay immediately.

Claiming to be lawyers, the scammers say they are with the “Financial Accountability Association” or the “Federal Legislation of Unsecured Loans” and often have the victim’s Social Security, old bank account numbers or driver’s license numbers as well as home addresses, employer information and even the names of personal friends and professional references.

Phone numbers that the scammers are calling from include: 949-468-5107, 415-200-0274, 213-784-5745, 408-715-1614 and many others.

Indian speaking man called and demanded i called him back. They are calling from a number outside the country. Second time I have gotten these calls. First time i actually fell for it.My mistake and learned the hard way.  Not falling for it a second time. They scammed me out of over $1000 shame on me. They get your information from filling out PayDay Loan appications online. 1st of all ignore them  and if you do get them on the phone get all there information address, fax number and make them give you documentation that you owe any money. They must provide that in writing if they are legit. Do not fall for it if you ignore them and are just as rude to them they will stop. Start making threats to them and they will go away. Do not be stupid and get scared like i did. Remember get all there contact info and them go after them. They have no right using your bad luck against you nor can they make threats towards you. Document everything.

They are not legit. If you filled out any application online with bank or social information they will hound you. They are scam artist working from India. Do not and I stress this do not give them any information. They will stop calling but it will take a while they will give up. They are calling from all different number so if you get them on the phone just tell them you will call them back and then just dont. screen your calls and see if you can get the numbers blocked if you can. Good Luck. They will call about 6-7 times a day. read my message below and you know why I am so educated in this manner.

They are not legit!!!! Keep getting calls from a Mr James Austin. Right with an Indian accent I think not. You are not a legit collector you are a scam artist. You prey on people's bad misfortune. Watch the news you losers you at least made the top three in bad scams for 2009 and I see you are continuing the job right into 2010. Maybe you will make number 1 next year.

3 calls in 2 days but my caller calls himself mark jackson with a heavy accent. wants me to call or my lawyer {hoping i guess that I don't have one}plus he sounds as if he is reading from a script cause he speaks slow with his accent and each message is the same. ends the message that if i don't call all he can say is good luck.. I am not filing another complaint to the FTC and my lawyer I have sent infomation everytime he calls

find it kind of funny that one message was on my voicemail was a little after 8 on the morning. I live on the east coast the 310 number is an area code in CA. on the west coast which would mean they called about 5 in the morning/ also if you do a google search you will find the same number for a doctor's office in CA.

These people  have been harassing me. I started receiving calls from a man with a very thick Indian accent who was actually rather threatening and almost un-understandable on the message. I have a strict habit of not answering phone calls from numbers I don't know. So about 3 or 4 days ago I started getting 4 calls a day with the same horrible messages.  "This message is intended for (me), the very second you receive this message I need you or your retain attorney of record (shouting), to return the call. This time is , extremely time sensitive. My name is David Christopher and the hotline to my reception is 310-362-3162. I will repeat that 310-362-3162. Don't disregard this message, do return the call. If you don't return the call (shouting) and I dont hear from your attorney either (still shouting), the only thing I can do.... (whispering) is wish you good luck. This situation will close on you.. goodbye."

Then, I received a message from the same dude today, but from 303-214-9057... which I may have answered because I have a lot of friends in that area code. This one went as follows:

"This is call from Federal Department of U.S. Government. My name is David Christopher. The nature of my call is a lawsuit, need attorney and social security number. So contact my number 310-362-3162. You need to contact my number. I'm sorry to say you have to ??????? goodbye."

At this point I am wondering if I could file some sort of suit against them for impersonating a Federal Department of the U.S. I have the messages saved and everything. If anybody has any advice... I'm open to it. I am NOT calling this [***] back.

I started to receive phone calls from this same number from a man with a very heavy accent as well, stating the same thing and wish me good luck if I didn't reply.  When I called them back he said he wanted my attorney's number I told him I didn't not have the number at hand and would call him back which I did with the number.  He yelled at me and said he never wanted his number, he wasn't taking it and wasn't calling the attorney.  He said a subpena was being filed with my employer and that I needed to show up in court on a certain date or I would have real trouble.  I asked him where he was calling from he said CA, I live in IL, I told him I had no idea what he was talking about, he said that by now the attorney fees against me were up to $9,000.00 dollars, I said again I have no idea what he was talking about nor did I understand 1/2 of what he was saying.  I called back and asked for a supervisor and they hung up on me.  I called back again and asked him if he was from the united states and to put someone on the phone that spoke english, that I couldn't understand him, he mocked me and told me he wanted to speak to someone for me because he didnt' understand me.  I asked him where he was from....after a long pause in a very errie voice he said from hell and then laughed weirdly.  I told him to stop calling me and he told me to never call the number again....my attorney said it isn't legit

report to the FTC website.. more and more this sounds like a scam and has to be stopped. The more people report to the FTC with the infomation they have the faster they can be stopped. talk to by lawyer who advised me that the D.A in CA. MAY BE GETTING A CALL SOON

My wife called them back and told them that I worked for the FBI, and that they really screwed up by calling our house.  They were really freaked out by this, and promised they would never call back again.  They haven't since :)

call my place of employment and left a threating message, the billing clerk heard of this number and told me to google it and it was true these people need to be stop, just wish i would of recived the call.. i wouldnt of been nice,,PLUS IT IS ALL A SCAM SO DONT BUY INTO THIS CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I received several messages from this number as well, but I couldn't understand a word he was saying.   I called the number, he once said his name was David Christopher, another time said Michael Copeland.  It sounded like the same person, with a very heavy indian accent.   He stated the same info others have listed above, but 1/2 of it i couldn't understand.  I asked to speak with someone else in their office, so I could understand what they were trying to tell me.  He got irate and hung up on me.  Glad to see I'm not the only ones getting these calls.  Scary though, if they do have social security numbers.  They are also calling several times the past few days.  How can we file a complaint?  I'm in Indiana.

I received this same call today- with the very same message/script everyone esle has posted in their messages. Of course this arabic guy's new name is Wayne Huntson. Never heard of an arabic named Wayne- LOL. I will call this guy back and give him a piece of the rude behavior he gave me.And he scremed at me with the mouth of his and calling me at work no less- well he has screwed up and I cant wait to talk to this carpet rider. I have no clue why he is even calling me anyways- so I was late on paying my Mastercard- big deal.

Got a call from a Mr. Shawn Taylor from the Law office of Lawrence Burke at this number funny same number as all the rest of you are getting calls from. HMMM! SCAM I THINK SO! What ever you do just ignore these people they are scum! Praying off good people's misfortune and especially in these hard times. Give me a break maybe next year they will make #1 on the scam list instead of #3. DO NOT TALK TO THEM AND IF YOU DO INSIST THEY NOTIFY YOU ONLY IN WRITING AND HANG UP ON THEM AND DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION AT ALL. THEY NEED TO BE STOPPED.

just got call from them...threatening of course.  Same number as everyone else on this post.  Turned the number over to my lawyer to persue further.
