I got a call stating that if I or my lawyer do not call Leo Fernandez back at "319...wait 310-362-7056" I will be sorry and that the "situation that will unfold" will make me sorry.  Um, random anonymous threatening phone calls - sounds like a federal offense to me.

I received a call from "the law firm" and they left a voicemail stating that I needed to return their phone call stating that I had criminal action against my social security number. When I returned the phone call the guy read off the screen that I had three charges for theft by deception for over $8000. Of course I paniced; me and my boyfriend kept calling them back and they would hang up on us. At one point they stated that I needed to pick up a subpeona at my place of employment and they new where I worked. I filed a police report against them and called them while the police officer was here I called them and put them on speaker phone and the guy did not know the name of his company and knew who I was without me stating my name. He stated my dad gave my information and that my dad is stupid and crazy.

I got the same call Danielle.  I'm filing a complaint with the FTC and I hope you will, too.  He did not tell me where he got all of my information.  I believe it was because I told him he was a fraud and a scam and I was reporting him to the FTC and the FBI.  I also explained how things work in THIS country.  He hung up on me!  Imagine, a REAL attorney's office would give you the information requested.  Further, anyone you owe money to would have to try and contact you first and give you a reasonable time to reply.

I just received the same call, and like i was real worried until i found this post. I don't think its real because he hung up in my face. I know what he's talking about, because i did request for a loan but never received it because i didn't finish the process. He hung up in my face many of times, and then said "Don't call here, we'll call you". Now imagine if this was a real law office the would have more respect, and when you searched up there number would have found the Business info and everything. Im so mad because he kept saying "Wait for the company to call you"

I just got the same call today and was also hung up on when I tried to ask anything...It was also about a cash advance loan in which I never finalized the application, but they had my social security number and name. What should I do? Who should I report them to? Although it appears to be a scam, I am worried anyways about the situation. I just lost my father on Thursday and I can't deal with this right now, but if there is scum out there messing with my life I want to ensure that they don't get away with this! What has everyone else done?

Did anyone do anything to stop it, or did they just quit calling??? I got my first call this morning and was just going to ignore them. I realize that if they were legitimate, they would act differently. If someone has a "lawsuit" against them, they get more than just a call on their cell phone.

    Schemers Threaten Arrest
Nevertheless, people unable to get credit elsewhere turn to payday loans to help them through desperate times. Scammers are taking advantage of these borrowers' vulnerability to con them out of even more money.

This week, the Better Business Bureau warned about a telephone scheme targeting people nationwide. Phony bill collectors call accusing people of not repaying payday loans. Victims are told they'll be arrested if they don't immediately wire a $1,000 payment or provide bank account or credit card numbers.

The callers claim to be lawyers with the Financial Accountability Association or the Federal Legislation of Unsecured Loans. The calls seem real because the callers know a lot of personal information about the victims, like their social security numbers, driver's license numbers and old bank account numbers. They sometimes refer to the victim's employer and even mention the names of personal friends and professional colleagues.

    Can You be Arrested?
No law allows you to be arrested for failing to pay a payday loan or other type of loan. In fact, there is a law that prohibits bill collectors from threatening you with arrest.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act doesn't allow bill collectors to:

•Threaten to have you arrested if you don't pay
•Repeatedly telephone to harass or annoy you
•Threaten you with violence or harm
    •Falsely claim to be attorneys
•Falsely claim that you committed a crime
Don't Give In to Scare Tactics
Don't be fooled into paying out money or giving personal information to these scammers. If you receive a suspicious phone call about a debt:

•Ask the caller to send the loan information to you in writing
•Refuse to verify any bank account, credit card or other personal information over the phone
•Report any telephone harassment or threats to the Federal Trade Commission. This is the agency that enforces the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
•File an online Better Business Bureau complaint to help let others know about the scam
•Contact your state Attorney General's office to find out about state debt collection and consumer protection laws that might apply

These people have called me about 4 times...each with a different number but always the same message. I need to call them back ortherwise face the consequences. Yea ok...the first time i owed them 111.00...them the second time i owed them 300.00 now they say i owe them 8000.00 i really just laughed. they said they were calling on behalf of Cash USA (the loan i got wasnt with that company) and that 'it was extra interest i didnt pay'. Once i told them i already talked to Cash USA and they told me i didnt owe any money they hung up. I wasnt really concerned at first but they actually called my job! So i called them back...and kept calling..and kept calling...and kept calling. They were acting like they didnt understand me at first...speaking another language...then they kept hanging up..then one guy asked 'do you want to be admitted? this is a hospital" and kept laughing. They were all laughing in the background and they all were joking around. so i played along..i called back with a spanish accent...HOLA!! then i called back and was an old lady..they hung up on me..and i kept calling..It indeed is a scam...
