- Trisha| 1 replyThey called my cell and did not leave a message.. I am a Realtor in Oregon.
- K replies to TrishaIt's a private company in Chicago that works for organizations (such as the National Science Foundation) doing surveys.
- BBSPWhy don't you leave a message?
I do not answer calls from people I do not know- Call type: Non-profit organization
- Tim| 1 replyEvery year since 1991 the NSF sends out this PhD survey that takes an hour to fill out. They send the massive form and they call, call, call pestering me to fill it out. I did the first few years but refuse to anymore. Still, they send it out each year and have this company nag about filling it out. They just do not take 'No thank you' for an answer. This is the second call with no message at work. There has been several calls to my home as well.

- privateYes, they called and said they were doing a survey from the Natl Science Foundation, where did I get my my Ph.D.? Said I was with a client, call me back another time, and she proceeded to call back several times in the next hour anyway (I didn't answer).
- Caller: National Science Foundation
- LisaI am in a similar situation as Tim--Did the survey for a few years after I got my Ph.D. If I had realized then that it was a life sentence, I never would have agreed to participate in the first place. They have sent countless paper surveys to my work; some of them I sent back with a big "do not wish to participate - take me off your survey list" written in marker across the page. To no avail. And they continue to call both my home and work numbers (boy was I an idiot for giving them my home number!). At first, I answered the calls and asked politely to be removed from their list. Once when I did this, I was actually told that this was not possible because they were required by the federal government to call. Huh? When I learned to do research with human subjects, one of the cardinal rules was the subject has a right to refuse to participate and to discontinue participation at any time for any reason. Guess the survey people don't have to play by the ethics rules. So now when they call, I just pick up the phone and hang it right back up. They are now down to calling only on Sundays. I like the idea about leaving the line open for awhile, or maybe speaking French, or answering with various phony business names. Good luck, fellow harassment victims.

- Fred replies to TimI'm in the same boat, I wonder how much money this survey costs the taxpayer.
- Canadathis number called my home looking for someone who does not live here...made it sound very urgent using words like Issues etc...urgent to contact a person...but was secretive about the information they were looking for ..we don't even live in the US
provided an 800 number to call back
still unknown about the purpose
will not answer that number again if it calls.
said they are connected to the University of Chicago
one wonders??- Caller: National Science Foundation
- Bob AnonEvery year since 1979... They are very good at tracking you. We've moved 6 times and they don't skip a beat. They used to send them with references to Langley VA.. For some reason they changed that to NORC U Chicago a few years ago. My question is how many PhDs actually respond? Obviously between the IRS and other agencies they already have access to all the answers to their questions... So I always assumed this was just to check one box ..

- GuentherThe caller of 312-759-5239 left a 3-second short and silent voicemail message.
Area code 312 is assigned to downtown Chicago.
I don't have any friends, family, acquaintances or business associates who live in the Chicago area.
As "BBSP" mentioned earlier (see message posted above), I do not answer call from unknown callers,
or callers who are not in my contacts. Period.
Hope this helps.- Caller: Chicago
- MichaelFirst time they called they left a detailed voice message indicating they were contacting me regarding a survey I'd been sent. Never got the survey so didn't call back. Every time since then they've called without leaving a voice mail. If this is the same PhD survey I'm likely thinking it is, it was a requirement at my university to fill the survey out as part of the exit requirements. That was the one and only time I filled out the survey. Not sure why they'd want to follow up on it years later.

- AnonA person from this number called a private cell phone number, asking for me. It is not my cell phone number and I would never have given out this number as my own. I do know the person to whom the number belongs. The caller asked for me, stating that he is from NSF. When the number was re-dialed, the person who answered purported to be from NORC Survey, under the purview of the University of Chicago, or so he claims.

- YetAnotherSame story as above. Pestering to fill out a survey of PhD's. Ha. I have thought of telling them that if they don't go away I will fill it out with random misinformation. I would not be surprised if other people have already done this without bothering to tell them.
- Susan| 1 replyThis is a company hired by the NSF to do surveys of US Ph.Ds. Their form takes about an hour to fill out and I honestly don't have time but they keep calling me and mailing me and emailing me. This has been going on for MONTHS. This has actually crossed a line. I now consider this to be harassment.

- Mike in MD replies to SusanIf you still have the address to mail the completed forms to, you can send them a notarized "Cease Communications" letter via Certified Mail, Return Receipt. If they contact you after receiving such a letter you can now sue them for violation of your order.
- Taro in CAIt's a NSF-funded survey, executed by a private company, I believe. They have no ethics. Called my work and home phones several times after 11pm. I considered it a harassment since they do not offer people to opt out the survey. It's been going on for 3 months. NSF must have lots of funding on this to waste.

- PhDI also received these calls. They never left a message. The good news is : After I failed to return their survey a couple times, they just sent me a $30 check as a token of appreciation for me to complete the survey. And I gladly compiled.
- MaryThey called three times in a row at 11:30 at night and woke me up. Once left a message, purporting to be a doctor at the National Science Foundation. Then hung up next two times when I responded. They call frequently but this is the first time at night. Sometimes the callers have trouble speaking in English. They say they are from NSF but I now believe it is a scam or people taking advantage of a call list to make harassing calls.
