Claimed to be from the IRS, but when I returned the call, it was much too efficient to be from a government agency.  Went straight thru.

There is a widespread IRS (or CRA) or "tax scam" being  practiced by scammers on both USA and Canadian residents.

USA tax payers should read this:
    http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/Phone-Scams-C ... 5-Filing-Season

Canadian tax payers should read this:
    http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/nwsrm/lrts/2013/l131210-eng.html

    Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

This scam is also described as scam #11, here:

They called my cell and said they were from the local sheriff's department and that I need to call some number right away. I did, and they said they were from the IRS and that there were 4 counts of tax fraud against me and that in the past 4 years, the total sum I have not paid is like $6000. They said there was gonna be a warrant in my name unless I told them to cancel it. And I didn't want to say any legally binding magic words till I felt comfortable. They identified themselves with these bogus names "Michael Black" "Thomas Obrien" but they had thick accents (Indian? Middle Eastern?). It was so scary, I'm so glad I found this website.

They called my cell and said they were an official from the local Police Department that I have an arrest order, which I never had any issue with the law. They said that I have to call for more information to the number 347 416 5133.  Also, they identified themselves with thick accents (Middle Eastern?, Australia?) and I could not understand the rest of the message. For that reason, I called my local police department and explain everything. The operator said that this was a scam, that is very common to reach people by phone and intimidate them. Also, the operator said that the police would never reach you by phone. The police reach you by mail  or showing them self at the door. I feel very scary.

I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone.  US mail only.   IRS does not file lawsuits.   Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter.  But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters.  90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively.  IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes.  IRS has no powers of arrest.    If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job.  IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of  money.  IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone.   IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case.  No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments.  Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but  usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement.    All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals.  All  contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.

Never return these sort of calls!.   They are looking for vulnerable people.  They tend to pick on women, single mothers, the elderly and members of the immigrant community.  If you call them back they may think you are vulnerable and then they will try to hit you with even more calls and intimidation.  Ignore and block the calls.

my best friend received a phone call today from this number 856-384-4600 stating he was calling from the Gloucester county sheriff's department g stating his name as dwayne watson, and they had an arrest warrant out for him for tax fraud, very aggressive behavior, and was advised to contact a Mr. Steve White and the supervisor is Michael Black. at the IRS and provided the phone # 347-416-5133.  Unfortunately my friend didn't know better and sent a wire transfer in the total amount of 6500.00, I traced the number to some company in Hyde Park NY with the name Paetec Communications, a defunct telecommunications company with a lot of bad reviews.  funny thing is my friend tried calling the number that showed up in his caller id, and it really was the Gloucester county sheriff's department, the only problem, was obviously there was no arrest warrant, another thing to note, these scammers, use software and apps to cloak phone numbers, they also have the ability for a few minutes to keep you from being able to reach anyone for help, by intercepting your calls.  They try to make it sound legit, by saying that the call is being recorded. and they do everything they possibly can to maintain you on the line as much as possible. My friend also said they all had indian accents
