It's a scam. Tell her not to send them a dime!

My grandma isn't going to send them the money yet. She's waiting till tomorrow morning then is going to our local Sheriff's department to talk to the Chief about this.

I had this same kind of awful call. My address was given to me along with my ssn number stating that I had closed an account and would be put in jail for check fraud. I also asked for the legal paper work that kept being referenced, however they said they could not share it with me. And in each message that was left behind, it always ended with "good luck."

Wish they could "catch" these people. I have reported it to our local law enforcement, Attorney General, and FTC....they also had me put a "fraud" watch on my credit report since she had all my information.

No one can arrest you for a loan or any payday loan. This is all a scam to get money from hard working people because they are to lazy to get a real job. If someone is going to serve you papers they do not give you warning, what they are doing is against the law. Don't worry, just ignore the calls and block them. I have had medical bills and have been served papers but then you just call who serves you and work out a payment plan. No one can sue you for money for loans, as far as them having all your information, I know because they have mine too. Just get life lock or something to help you out. God bless you all!

There are no papers.  It's a scam.  They are trying to scare money out of people.  Read the other notes.

Being in ordinary civil debt is NOT a crime and you cannot be arrested for it.  Debt collectors have no influence on the criminal justice system in any case.  This was just an attempt to scare some money out of you.

You've been a victim of the the Infamous District 217 Scam.
Some crazy scamming operation.    It has a  history on 800notes.   Somebody always calls saying they from  the mythical district ( or division) 217.    No idea where they are located.  Usually they say you’re being charged with some sort of serious crime.  Most of the time,  check fraud or bank fraud.  Total clap-trap.

Just because a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt does not mean you owe it
If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:

1.    Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
2.     Demand a debt validation letter by US mail.  E-mail no good.
3.    Do not pay  the collection agent or anyone else a  DIME  until the debt is validated.

Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply block their calls and ignore them.

If they continue to bother you, and you know you do not owe any money,  tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  You might have to yell at the scammer and talk over him or her.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.

I mistakenly answered the phone and they ask for me by my previous name.  I haven't used that name in over 20 years.  They're a bunch of low lives that are trying to collect on old debts that way past the time they could be collected on.
