I have gotten several calls also from 404-410-7706.  I blocked them on the house phone and called them back from my work phone.  The recorded message says the name of the company is Nationwide Credit Services.  They are just another annoying sales company calling.

I got a call at work from 404-410-7706 asking for me and was asked to confirm my identity by telling this foreigner my SS# and birthdate!  He couldn't even tell me what company he was calling from or his name.  Really embarrassing to be harrassed at work for something that is a scam!  I did not give out any personal information and told him that if he ever called me at work again that I would report him.

"Tape all the phone calls "  To what extent.  Several states are 2 party states and you have to inform them that you are recording.  Failure to do that means that at the very least the recordings are inadmissible in court and at the very worst you get charged with breaking the wiretapping law.

This is not a sales company.  It is a criminal enterprise pretending to be a debt collector.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

If you feel you SSN has been compromised, in addition to putting a fraud alert at the 3 credit bureaus, you may want to notify the IRS.  Here is the link, fill out the proper form (probably 14039):

I answered the call since I was expecting a contractor to call me back.  The person asked for a person who had my POTS phone number 6 years ago.  Unfortunately, they had the right name and this person evidently  was a deadbeat.  I have gotten dozens of calls from creditors over the past years and I assume she has been using her old number as a scam for whatever.  I explained and the guy on the phone said he would mark my number as incorrect and thanked me.

With the proliferation of crooks pretending to be debt collectors, it is unfair to assume that person is a "deadbeat".  He might simply have gotten on a sheet being sold among debt collectors known as a portfolio an has been targeted by each group when they buy that list.  The list may or may not even be valid debts.
