    Great post Brent. Good info.
    I have been dealing with the pricks the past year. Every couple of weeks it's a new number calling and a new agency trying to collect for check fraud. I have notified all the athorities with each one that calls.
    I don't know why these jerks keep trying. I know I don't have any bad checks written or have not defaulted on any loans so I am not suddenly going to tell them they are right and I am ready to pay them.
    I've wondered if they are all part of an organization. Some day with enough complaints maybe the authorties will put more effort in to shutting these people down. Wish there was a way we could band together. Form some kind of anti spamming network or get some legal eagles who are willing to go after these people.
    I just feel sorry for the people that fall for thier crap and pay them.
    Anyway, I guess we the people will keep posting and letting others know what is going on.

    Hi Zimbo,
    I wish something would happen also to halt these criminals. Based on my research/experience it appears that stopping these calls and breaking up their networks may be impossible. As you know they use countless different phone numbers to harass and extort us and use a variety of angles to facilitate the scam. Seems to me the only possible solution would be through more checks and balances or reporting systems placed on phone companies who provide these criminals with their 800 numbers and other numbers they use that appear to business numbers.

    Also, many of these criminals speak English very poorly, use made up American names and I guess they think we don't notice it. Those things should be dead giveaways to anyone who receives a scam call that the scammer isn't even in the United States. The fact that so many of them aren't in the U.S. adds a level of complexity towards stopping it.

    Another thing, if you talk to one these scammers long enough and act like you are going to pay them, they'll eventually get on to either wanting your bank account numbers or will request that you WIRE your money to them. Hopefully, most people see the problems with those issues.

    I say that it may be impossible because I have done all the things that government advises us to do and nothing appears to have changed, except now and then new numbers crop up on my caller i.d. from scammers. I have reported these crimes to my Attorney General's Office, the FTC and I have even spoken to an FBI agent. Although, concerned & somewhat helpful, the agent knew these rampant crimes were occurring but nothing more was to occur following our conversation. I don't fault the agent.

    I refuse to change my phone number over these people who lack integrity and I have learned to deal with them to the point where it can be entertaining for me.

    I posted because their scam only works because there are people who fall for it. I don't fault those people who get scammed because if you don't know any better, you may really believe you owe money and will go to jail or will suffer whatever it is they are claiming will happen. I hope that those who read my post will be able to recognize a phone scam, turn it around on the scammer and avoid being a victim. Hopefully, someday everyone will know it's a scam and then the scam will no longer work which means they'll quit harassing us. Good luck!

    Yeah, same thing here, total attitude from the people who work there and reluctance to send out anything in writing, I asked them to fax me a copy of the "complaint" and four  hours later NADA, sounds like a total SCAM to me......

    Do not give out your Social Security number, even if they ask you for it. Do not give them you address, your date of birth, or any information which they ill use. These [***] can't do a [***] thing to you. They claim to be INVESTIGATORS... Ask them for their LICENSE NUMBER. Every so called investigator requires LICENSE in the STATE OF GEORGIA.. The4 company must have Insurance and its collectors must be BONDED in the State of GEORGIA. Ask these scumbags for the name of their BONDING COMPANY. If they do... go to your computer and go to THE SECRETARY OF STATE RECORDS and see if there really is a BONDING COMPANY . They must be LICENSED and an OFFICIAL COMPANY in the State of Georgia as well. Then, look up their names , Go to 411.com... type in their company name. If they are real, it will come on a Street address. Call the Bonding Company and ask them if the have a SURETY BOND on this company..
    DO NOT PAY THIS GOD DAMN COMPANY A PENNY. They are going to be Looked into by The Federal, State & County Authorities. They are Extortionists of the worse kind.They can kiss your ass on a HOT DAY in August.
    I also suggest you write upm a report on these EXTORTIONISTS by going to  RIPOFF.COM, once youn get there you can file va report on line. File the complaint against them and the specific Collector. Really really really write a seething complaint.
    When you are done, our suggestion is yu e-mail a company called WE The People. You need to send them the information as to : Any Threat of Arrest, The Collectors name & Telephone number and the time of the call.
    The address we have is:  wethepeople177682@ymail.com   then... e-mail another company at :   theagency@verizon.net.   Both companies are gathering information against this company and a company called EBSS ASSOCIATES. They are going to send a BARRAGE OF COMPLAINTS to the FEDERAL, STATE and COUNTY AUTHORITIES. My suggestion is ... SCREW THESE [***] TO THE WALL

    I keep getting calls for my son-in-law saying they are investigating a check fraud.  I never pass on information and do not answer the phone.  There is a 4 year limitation from the last payment they received for you.  They can sue and get a judgment and that is all.  There is no debtor's prison or we would all be there for one thing or another.

    i too have received a call from this bogus business. I missed the call, but they were kind enough to leave a voicemail. After googling the number, i found countless complaints, I couldn't help myself, i had to call. when they answered i informed them that if they ever called my phone again they would have more trouble than they could handle.
       The number is a georgia number and the best way to handle these people is to write a letter to sam owens,attorney general of georgia.

    The first thing this company better do is hire a proof reader that can spell and has good grammar.
    If you check the website posted above by Rick on Jan. 12th you will find plenty of misspellings and a bad choice of words!!! However the one that really takes first prize is the link for complaints, after you have filled out the form completely with your complaint against this company, they have a box you can check to recieve emails on discounts, promtions, etc!!! LOL!!!

    I understand people get upset, Its hard out here right now. People owe money and can't pay it back. Tat in itself is frustrating. Most Americans are honest, if they take a loan they pay it back. The people on these sites are the small % that do not want to pay back what they owe and try to find ways not to pay. I ask this question what intelligent person listens or even belives posts that are written here that are so unprofessional and full of cursing.

    I filed with the GA Consumer Protection Agency against Dorsey and Thornton Associates. They have constantly calling me on the last couple of weeks or so. Multiple times during the day. Their business license should be revoked in the state of Georgia especially after they just settled in a case against them for illegal debt collection activities.

    Consumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
    Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

    Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

    Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

    Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

    Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

    This is for Concerned Citizen------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Debt Collector Dorsey Thornton & Associates Enters into $15.5 Million Settlement with the Governor’s Office of Consumer Protection
    February 29, 2012
    ATLANTA, GA – Dorsey Thornton & Associates, LLC, a Georgia debt collections company, and its principal officers Wyteria Dorsey and Michael Thornton, have entered into an Assurance of Voluntary Compliance with the Governor’s Office of Consumer Protection (OCP), resolving charges that the company committed multiple violations of the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and the Georgia Fair Business Practices Act. OCP’s investigation stemmed from a series of reports from consumers that Dorsey Thornton & Associates harassed and deceived consumers by:
    •    Threatening consumers with arrest or imprisonment if they did not pay the debt;
    •    Refusing to send consumers written proof of the debt owed;
    •    Identifying themselves as “Investigators” rather than disclosing that they were debt collectors attempting to collect a debt;
    •    Contacting third parties and divulging information about the debtor’s account;
    •    Calling consumers before 8:00am or after 9:00pm
    •    Continuing to contact consumers even after they told the company to stop calling them;
    Under the Assurance, Dorsey Thornton & Associates has agreed to forego collection of 31,433 accounts, representing a total of $15,491,899.36 in consumer debt. The Assurance also requires the company to pay a civil penalty and to reimburse OCP for investigative and legal expenses.
    “Debt collectors who engage in this kind of harassment, deception and other illegal behavior in the state of Georgia must and will pay a steep price,” said John Sours, Administrator of the Governor’s Office of Consumer Protection.
