- AnonymFIRST, the Do Not Call List works AS IT IS INTENDED to work. It is not an automatic "pass" for you to avoid every scumbag on the face of the Earth who dials your number trying to rob you. The DNC is a program whereby legitimate and legally operated telemarketers are required to register their business with the State Attorney General's office, and also to BUY (read that - pay for with their own money) the List that has been created, and periodically updated, of all the people who have registered who do not care to be bothered by such phone calls. Then, they are required to scrub their OWN calling lists of every registered number before they make that first phone call. That is how the DNC List works, when everyone plays by the rules. Those who don't, are subject to fines, fees, and even jail time if and when they are identified and apprehended. And yes, it has happened before, and hopefully, the Good Lord willing and the creeks don't rise, it will happen a whole lot more.
The real trouble starts when the criminal element enters the ring. First, THEY don't do any such silliness as "register" with any Attorney General's office, and they SURE AS HELL don't pay out THEIR own "hard scammed for money" for any lists of people who don't want to be bothered! 😱 What are you? Stupid or something?? 😜 Heck no, THEY couldn't possibly be bothered themselves to obey anybody else's LAWS!! 😯 They're the criminals, remember? They don't follow anybodys rules but their own, and even then, they are as likely to break their own laws, shoot their pals and partners in the back of the head as they are to look at them.
SO - they get a bunch of cheap throw away phones, or use stolen ones, even cheaper that way, go offshore if they aren't already, and set themselves up with a laptop, some cheap program that lets them run their calls through it while SPOOFING someone else's phone number, which is what shows up on your caller ID screen, or get numbers from some other source that are not being used right now - same effect - so there's no way (they think) to trace them, while they go try and work their scams on gullible "phish."
The program changes - sometimes it's the Auto warranty scam, which comes around every so often, or the ever-popular Student Loan scam, the good old "lower your interest rates on all your credit cards, or the one that seems to come around like the pink horse on the merry-go-round, and starts out with a recorded female's voice greeting you with "Hello! This is Rachel calling, about your last opportunity to......." and then introduces you to the scam-of-the-week-club. It's always the same old thing - just dressing the pig up in a different dress.
You CAN do a few things about it, starting with never answering calls from numbers you don't recognize. Period. IF it's legit, then they WILL leave a message on your voicemail and you can respond appropriately. IF it's not legit, if it's a wrong number, or if it's those pesky criminals again, THEY aren't going to leave you any voicemail message. They just hang up, and move on to cast their line back into the pool swarming with phish. Some will bite, most won't. DON'T BE THAT PHISH!!
IF you happen to accidentally answer the call anyway, do NOT "press five" or any other number to be taken off their lists! ALL that's going to really do is confirm to them that somebody has chomped on the bait, the number they dialed is an active number, and you WILL be getting LOTS more calls!! From any and every number on the planet who gets hold of the lists THEY create and sell to each other!
You can report these calls to the State Attorney General's office, or whatever other office has been charged with dealing with this issue. Usually it's connected somehow with the DNC Office, but not always. It's easy to find out if you do a few minutes research online. It will tell you what information you can provide and how, what they do with it, and how they go about it.
Basically, if you don't know the number, don't answer it! It's really that simple. If EVERYONE did that, then they would all dry up and blow away. They can't function without a willing and gullible audience. Yes, it might be a little annoying, but then other criminals can be a lot MORE annoying! If you DO answer them, at least get any information you can get so you can report them. If you must sleep during odd times because of shift work, turn the phone ringer off, and check your voicemail when you get up. Easy peasy! If you get any useful information, report it. I do it all the time. No, I don't answer the calls, but my caller ID gives me enough information to do it. And I get written confirmation from the Attorney General's office in the mail. If you have several numbers to report, you can do that too.- Caller: Unknown.
