A computer generated voice mail was left suggesting that it was 'Heather Grey' and it was an urgent time sensitive matter. I must call the supplied number or legal action will be taken. My wife called the supplied number and they said it was the investigative branch of the IRS called to collect unpaid taxes. A scam. All our taxes have been paid.

have received several call from this number.  Area Code - San Francisco CA.   left messages saying they are from the IRS and there is a matter that is extreemly urgent and don't ignore their call.  When i did call number, the first thing the lady asked was what was my case number and name of attorney. told her she may have the wrong person - I didn't give her my name (she never gave me hers when asked). Never said who she was calling for??  then asked to confirm/verify mistake by giving last 4digits of my SS.- told her she was crazy and should know better since you are the IRS.    cant do that she should know better She hung up on me.   what kind of scam is this???

I Received the same type call, but after returning the call they told me the police would be at my home in the next 2 hours for IRS debt.

Same experience as everyone else...I returned the call and spoke with a Mike Larry (sounded like he was from India). He told me I owed back taxes and I should have my criminal lawyer present when they came to my house to arrest me. They all of my assets...driver's license, passport, bank accounts, etc. were suspensed. I told him I knew nothing about this and was never notified of any issue with my taxes. He said they had sent 2 certified letters. After talking for a few minutes...he hung up.

Got recording saying it's from Internal Revenue Services....I just heng up.

I got the same recording. Called them. Talked to "Steven Smith," sounded like he was in India. When I wouldn't give my SS#, he hung up. Definitely a scam.

Just got a scare tactic call from them, same message as other posters.  Rediculous, we would have been served by mail if there was an issue.  Plus govt number would most likely be 800 number.  Im glad for your posts, thanks!

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail tophishing@irs.gov.

I got the same call ... I called them to see what the heck they was talking about... no one would answer for me to leave a message.. I did not.. I figured it was a scam but wasn't sure.. owe no back taxes.. Hope no one falls for this scam..

I called the supplied number and 'Mike Larry'  (sounded like he was in India) answered saying he was an agent from the investigative branch of the IRS and was calling to collect unpaid taxes. He told me I owed back taxes in the amount od $6250.44 and I should have my criminal lawyer present when they came to my house to arrest me. I told him I knew nothing about this and he said the IRS had notified me twice, in June. He said that I had signed for 2 certified letters and I was a criminal. Then he asked for my SSN.... I told him to have sex with himself (in mor graphic terms :O) and hung up.

I have had more thin 3 calls from this scame bit I can only member the 3 each time they gave me some Ryan smith or rob smith but they all sound like they were from India
I live with multiple people so whine I saw navio ca on the I'd thought it was for a roommate bit it was for me from the "irs" saying I was being sued and they wanted to now who my lawyer was and his contact information I asked why I was being sued and they said bake taxes I have payed every year they said they sent a latter I told thime I didn't and to send another one.
A week later my roommate picked up who o told about the call and they talked for me the sacame people said they said if I didn't pay they were going to put out a warnet for my arrest. Well I was at work so my roommate called the police and asked if they could search my name for any warrant. Well the police did come to the house but they water to now whine we got the call and that they just spoke to another lady who had the same type of call and nether her or I had a want out
2 mounts later I got a automate voice mail saying I need to call bake for a time sensitive issues my roommate called bake and talked with thime and they need my "case number" and I should of recited it in the mail I havenot gotten anything in the mail so we told thime to send us something in the mail aging they said we are sending the police to your house we said okay come pick me up thin and they just hanged up. We called the police who as last time said that there was no warrant and took down the information from the call

I just came back from being away this weekend and had a call that came in at 9:41 AM Friday, July 18, advising that if I ignore their message they -- supposedly the IRS -- will take legal action against us.  I returned the call this morning -- only to receive a recorded message asking me to leave my name and telephone number.  I was very surprised to receive such a message, since we too are NOT in arrears on any taxes due the IRS!  Good to hear (in a strange sort of way) that this is just a scam. . . I couldn't imagine why the IRS is calling -- and then saying, "Take care" at the end!?!

Do consider maybe getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $60.00 or so.

Exact same conversation here. I told them I was reporting them and recording them. Will it have an impact? Had to give it a try.

I also received call Friday the 18th from Heather Gray with the 415-251-9782. I called back the number today thinking it was a hoax and spoke with an Indian man - that I had 2 hours to comply and I need to hire a criminal attorney.

I am actually on the phone with the actual Internal Revenue now to verifty even though I know it is a scam want to make sure my name is not tarnished with the IRS.

Got the same message - from Heather Grey - called back today & was told the person on the phone was Officer Kevin Scott from IRS & that they needed the name of my attorney so they could contact them to discuss my case for back taxes owed. I responded that I do not owe any back taxes and he very quickly responded OK, bye & hung up.  I then tried calling back the # several times & it went directly to voicemail. This then prompted me to look up the #! Wish I had before so I would've known this was a scam!
